Yes, I've seen the Stones many times, and I have never seen them have such a genuinely good time. They seemed to know it was special.

Before "This Place is Empty Without You," Keith stepped up to the mike and said, "This is as close to home as it gets." He got extremely choked up -- I was close enough to see his eyes -- and he actually was too choked up to sing the song.

One of his girls with Patti Hansen was sitting near me, danced alone a little, then dashed off to dance at the B-stage. She was lovely, very polite, very polite to security as she dashed about, running in and out of the backstage area with a couple of friends.

But Mick was literally on fire.

I saw Tina Fey tonight from SNL (about 7th row center) and there was someone who looked alot like Priscilla Presley. Was that her?

Greatest show I've seen... I wrote a brief review (Cole - NYC)

And to think I almost didn't make it to the show. I could've gone home after the first 10 songs on a high... but the second half was really tight with the warhorses!!

I laugh because almost every sho someone here or on Shidoobee will claim the latest show was the greatest ever. I have done it myself. For me the gretest show I was at was Olympia 2003.

I just wish I had seen them in 1972.

To georgeV: after 2 Friday concerts at the Spectrum in 72, along with one afternoon concert at MSG, one could truly say the Stones are ripping it up this tour.

Interesting... that was the 40 Licks Tour... IMO 40Licks was the very height of musicianship for this band. I never saw them playing better and several of my personal "greatest shows" by the Stones were 40 Licks gigs.

I did see them in 1972 and those were also some of their greatest performances. Perhaps the single greatest difference between 1972 and 2003 (30 years later) is the evolution of Keith's guitarwork. He's just plainly a MUCH BETTER more intricate guitarist in 2003 than he was in 72.

Keith is better now than in 1972? I suppose that is a matter of opinion. Certainly he has matured in some respects but his best rock n' roll guitar playing IMHO was in the '70s when his guitar had a profound presence on Stones recordings and performance. Now, and especially during live performances, his guitar is more a part of the over tonal charteristic of the songs rather than the forceful presence it once was. My tuppence at least.

His guitar was never more profound that during Forty Licks Tour when he and Ronnie were weaving Midnight Rambler or Can't You Hear Me Knocking... far eclipsed anything he did as Mick Taylors "punctuation boy" back in 1972.

I GUESS ITS ALWAYS JUST OPINION. THE STONES WERE A GUITAR AND BACK IN 72/73. NOW KEEF IS JUST A PART FO THE SOUND. HIS PLAYING HAS CHANGED BUT I'LL TAKE BYE-BYE-JOHNNIE OVER ANYTHNG HE DID ON 4 FLICKS. KEEF PALYS A LOT OF "FILLS" NOW. He was gerat on Midnoght Rambler in 72 - watch Ladies and Gentlmen...........

Uhhhhh, lemme see . . . comparing the Forty Licks Keith to 72? You mean the Keith who had come up with immortal riffs for SFM, JJF, HTW, and BS in the past four years? The Keith who had co-written Can't You hear me Knockin, Sway, Bitch and Wild Horses 2 years before? And the Keith that, in the past 12 months or so, had just finished writing, singing and playing on Exile on Main Street, which is either (i) the greatest R&R album ever recorded AT HIS HOUSE in Nellcotte; or (ii) the greatest R&R album ever? You mean that Keith?

You see... you're caught up with the distinction between GUITAR PLAYING and SONG WRITING...

Yes, no question Keith and Mick did their best songwriting in the late 60's and early 70's...

But you look at a tape of Keith putzing around dropping a few riffs on top of Mick Taylor in 1972 vs. Keith and Ronnie weaving on the 40 Licks Tour...

Did you even see any 40 Licks gigs ?? Those are GUITAR MASTERPIECES...

You seem to think that someone can't improve their technique after they write a song, that's ridiculous, especially in Keith's case.

Yeah, I'll acknowledge the improvement in technical skill and the consistency in the live setting. He's clean now, which probably makes a difference. But in the studio from 68-72, he crafted the greatest guitar licks in the history of music.

Of course I saw the 40 Licks tour. I also saw them in 73 when I was 12 years old, and I've never recovered.
