Listened to Brussels Affair for the first time today!

And man, was it good! I had spent a good portion of the morning getting it off LimeWire and then started listening to a rather 'peppy' version of Brown Sugar! BS should be played that way even now - it simply cooks!! I loved hearing both Keith AND Mick on Happy. That was beautiful!! Midnight Rambler seems to do anything but ramble! They played that song at locomotive speed! Great stuff!! Now I know what everyone (okay, mostly everyone lol) was talking about when they said that Brussels Affair was a good boot to have! Anyone who does not have this boot, go check it out or maybe I'll even post some tunes over in the Buy/Sell/Trade section. This is vintage Taylor-era Stones guys 'n' gals! smiling smiley

Agreed. I've purhcased it about 25 years ago (in college) Nasty Songs. It's a miracle I still have it since I lent it to so many people and most of them drank a million beers. There were some great boot albums floating around late 70s early 80s.

MT is incredible for the final three songs in 72 Rip This Joint, JJF and Street F Man. Compare 72 Steet F Man to 4 Flicks Steet F Man and see how far they've fallen. Ronnie makes noise MT plays super leads.

There are so many versions of this around, I'm trying to figure out which version to post. Here's a link to everything about Brussels '73, where do you start?

"You Can't Always Get What You Want (11:06): Long improvised solo's by Taylor and Bobby Keys highlight the center section of the song. Listen for Keith's rhythm playing during the saxophone solo. A testament to his skill as a rhythm guitarist."

This has to be the most perfect version of any Stones song ever recorded! Absolutely flawless.

Thsi first time I heard it (and I really didn't know what I was getting at the time. I was going bootleg crazy in collge). I was FLOORED.

I'm usually not one to participate in these Taylor discussions, but his lead on SFM however skillful has hardly anything to do with the song. It is of course an arrangement you choose as an artist, but this is a bit far off.

The Four Flicks SFM however, especially the Twickenham performance, is also a version with tougher licks than the original, but one that is better than the 72 imo as it bears in mind that "rearranging" does not necessarily mean: "transferring all songs into the same up-speed string hitting" like they thought it meant in the seventies.

yes taylor floats like a butterfly and stings like a BEE. Did you hear how Taylor
and Keys are playing off another with there two solos. Its like Nicky Hopkins and
Taylor trading off on Time Waits For No One at the end of the song.

Stones89,

Great you appreciate this monument of music. YCAGWYW, TD and GS are the summits of this best of Stones alive. Those who wrote that the musical combination of Keith and Taylor was not the best the Stones ever had, have surely not listened to that CD.

Of course its a milestone. But the Taylor-fixation
or -obsession might pass a point when it becomes ridiculous.

Same for me best Live Boot ever.

I still wonder if the solo's from Mick Talor in this area where rehearsed or just made up.
I also wonder if Keith was happy that Mick T was on the foreground that much.

I know bv, I feel like I've been living under a rock! lol I have to admit, if I hadn't come onto this site, then I probably wouldn't have known that it even existed. I'm still learning about all the various bootlegs that everyone is talking about. Now I have Brussels Affair, Liver Then You'll Ever Be, the majority of Atlantic City '89, Live In Security, The Other Side and Stripped Companion. Any other good bootlegs to get?

In fact it is a great boot, I heard it first in 75/76. But in my opinion it is far from perfect. The vocals of Mick Jagger aren't quite good. The guitars on "Gimme Shelter" are out of tune etc. Further I prefer YCAGWYW in the non-sax versions from 75/76 and the solo interpretation of Ron Wood. It fits better to the atmosphere of the song. "Rambler" is too fast in the beginning and at the end. I think we have a great deal of boots which are better in sound and interpretation.

NICOS, Keith said at the time, back-when that he wasn't a Lead Guitarist,
he tried but couldn't, but he could play rhythm with the best of them
(accurate statement) when he was asked about Taylor influence on the Stones
sound on that 1973 European Tour.

I downloaded some of the 1975 songs with "Ronnie" on Lead.
Gimme Shelter, YCAGWYW - and the people on this board who said
Ronnie leads back there were on a par with Taylor..............

Although that was some of Ronnie's best, it's like compairing a Ford with
a Ferrari (IMO)

MCDDTLC thanks for the statement, didn't know that Keith said that.

I heard that too and when it comes to certain type of leads its true. However, if it is Chuck Berry- type leads he's the best. Listen to Bye-Bye Johnnie from 72. Keith is just not any good at MT-type flowing leads.

>> didn't know that Keith said that <<

you might like reading the direct quote ... ah here it is:

"As a guitar player I know what I can do. It doesn't matter about the B.B. Kings, Eric Claptons and Mick Taylors, 'cause they do what they do - but I know they can't do what I do. They can play as many notes under the sun but they just can't hold that rhythm down, baby. I know what I can do and what I can't. Everything I do is strongly based on rhythm 'cause that's what I'm best at. I've tried being a great guitar player and, like Chuck Berry, I have failed."
- Keith Richards (from [www.timeisonourside.com] - i believe it's originally from a Charone interview)

Bobby Keys wasn't in Brussels, the solo is played by a black guy (Trevor Lawrence?) while Mick was at the piano.
Jim Price was the second horn player.
I remember Stew at the piano for the last songs.

Hey with sssoul, the Lonnie Mack quote at the end is the bets. I don't now about Lonnie Mack but thier are tons of great technical guys out thier that can't write a song and have zero charisma.

It seemed to me that in the mid/ late 70s there were tons of guys that had all these crazy fast solos but no rythm at all. AT least MT or Clapton or the Alman Bros stay within teh rythm of the tune.

I remember as a naive chap in the 70's listening to this recording and wondering why the hell the Stones hadn't released anything from this era...just mind-numbing stuff, the whole 72/73 thang....
