Hi,
What criteria do you use to determine what was the best tour for you?
Name your top 5 tours.

For me it's strictly performance/musicianship so that eliminates A BIGGER BANG.

In chronological order:

1969-70
1973
1978
1997-99
2002-03

I gotta say that Seattle 2019 and Seattle and Vancouver 2024 were amongst the most memorable for me.

Which probably in large part is that as I'm getting older, I'm forgetting the other shows I was at in '89, '94, '97, '98, '05, '06 and 2013.

As Seattle ‘19 and Seattle ‘24 are the only two I’ve seen so far, I agree! Both great shows.

Performance is key.

In chronological order:

1969 U.S.A. Tour
Europe 1973
1981-82 tours
1989-90 tours
1995 European theatre shows
1997-98 tour
1999 No Security tour
2002-2003 Licks Tour

I haven’t heard enough from 1972, and only Perth from 1973 pacific shows. 1975-76 and 1978 don’t particularly interest me; although Gimme Shelter from LA Friday is sublime, admittedly. A Bigger Bang tour was a letdown after Licks. As for ‘today’? Well, they are still thoroughly enjoyable, just not ‘up there’ with yesteryear.

smileys with beer

Hope you get to see a few more. I kind of felt the Seattle 2019 one was the last show I'd be able to see and then 5 years later they're back, which was fabulous. But looking at the calendar ahead, it makes me wonder.

1978 - Cleveland
1989 - Los Angeles
1999 - Anaheim

No Security was the last great tour. There might have been an appearance afterward, but Charlie was peaking, and so was Keith in '99.

I include '78 because it was the first time I saw them, and there was still 'gods came down from the rock heavens' about them. '89 because they bested their opening act, Guns and Roses.

All other times I saw them, after '99, up to 2013, just didn't measure up.

Keith ‘peaked’ a decade earlier, imo. Still, No Security may have been the last round of shows whereby Keith put in near-consistent solid shifts.

Saw them the first time in 2003. Stockholm x3. Way, way higher quality and consistency than ABB. After that there have been some exceptional moments, Glastonbury being one example. Fun thing is that from my point of view Keith has actually decreased his messing upp of intros and playing the wrong note in the latest years whereas 10 years ago and in the early stages of No Filter was very clear.

At the same time, the last time we really saw the good old glance of everyone very energetic on stage was around 10 years ago, Glastonbury mentioned, but also Stockholm and Oslo. Mick was running more and was more active and showed parts of vintage Stones (although him running a lot and being out of breath was not always good either)

The best show I attended was Chicago 2, Soldier Field 1997. Factors:

- Excitement of tour start, band high energy and into it
- 24 song setlist touching on all eras, many albums
- Best stage/production they ever had
- Great crowd, environment (remember the skyline in the background)
- My college buddy at University of Missouri (was start of my senior year) and I drove 8 hours there and 8 hours back completely spur of the moment, blasting the Flashpoint album on the way
- Was only my second time seeing them

A lot of subjective stuff. How good Keith played the Sympathy solo or whatever really isn't that important at the end of the day. Our mediocre seats didn't really matter much either, comparing to other shows since when I've had 3rd row, etc.

Four are truly memorable to me, listed in order with the best first:

1969 - LA Forum, first show
1966 - Hollywood Bowl
2002 - Tacoma Dome
2019 - Seattle Lumen Field

I suppose my motivation for these thoughts comes from how the band sounded, whether or not they are introducing new material, and their performance against my expectations.
The 1966 show was my first concert ever and I was just mesmerized by it all, I couldn't believe I was watching the Stones play.
The 1969 show showed me just how much they had developed as a blues/rock group. Let it bleed had just been released and they played some from that album. It was just unbelievable. I felt that they had gone from a pop band to a serious blues/rock group. The addition of Mick Taylor made a huge difference in the sound. I'll never forget that show.
The last 2 are just great shows with good setlists. 2019 especially stands out as it was the last time I saw the band with Charlie. It was a warm summer evening in Seattle and they just rocked!

Seattle 2019 mentioned by at least 3 different people here. What made that show outstanding? Thanks Dave G for your explanation.

I’ve only seen them 4x. Nashville 2015, DC (Maryland) 2019, Nashville 2021 and Atlanta 2024.

Tough to beat the first time, because I had no frame of reference. Performance is the most important thing for me, but other things like seating location, weather, other fans’ behavior, set list, and mind enhancers can give one show an edge over another.

Ranking my 4:
1. Atlanta 2024 (highlights: flashing Mick and him smiling because of it, and Sweet Virginia)
2. DC 2019 (highlight: Mercy, Mercy for the only time since Hyde Park 1969)
3. Nashville 2015 (highlight: my first Stones show, sat behind Brad Paisley’s wife, Kimberly Williams)
4. Nashville 2021 (highlights: Connection for the first time in 15 years, Troubles A’ Comin’ for the last time)

Midnight Rambler is always a highlight for me. So good live!!

Performance-wise, the best show I attended was probably the first of the two Twickenham shows in 2003. The first Wembley Arena show from the same year is up there for me, too. Unfortunately, I haven’t heard a ‘good enough’ recording of my first-ever Stones show: Giants Stadium, 2002.

1990 Wembley -Bill w’s last gig - The most electric atmosphere
2003 Wembley arena - they played great that night
1982 Wembley Stadium - My first show
Since 2003 I’ve seen Sheffield in 2006 and Manchester in 2018 Both of which had their moments, but neither really hit the heights of their heyday.
Of the tours I was too young to see 1971 is my favourite.
Keith is on fire, Mick is really into it and Charlie is at his peak in my opinion. It’s really intense but they’re still plenty of space.
An honourable mention to Brussels 73, but I’m not a fan of the frantic blur of noise that the end of the set descends into. I prefer the band when they’re swinging.
