absolutely

and frankly far more interesting then what they actually ended up performing on the show

question to those who where alive then

if this complete rehearsal was aired instead of the show that was how would it have been received by the audience watching at home?

would people be bored or upset or would they have genuinely loved this as much as me 40 plus years later?

i understand as a fan i may be biased here so i thought i'd ask since i've wondered this before

It was interesting to see Mick raw and creative, so many things in that rehearsal put a smile on my face, Keith turning Mick's guitar down at about 3 minutes in, speaks volumes ( pardon the pun )
Mick rubbing his nose, licking Ronnie's face hehe.
But the Jam at the beginning with Keith and Mick on guitar is priceless.
It's a pity Mick lost his ability to play like that just a few years later, and obviously Keith decades later.

i don't know if it's that mick lost the ability to play like that as much as he chooses not to as much

personally i wish mick would play more guitar with the band

it always sounds great and i'm still confused why he only played guitar for the end of angry on the last tour and not at all on the two performances of bite my head off

i suppose he wants to be able to move around and dance and work the crowd but he just looks so cool with a guitar and he can clearly still play it as well as he ever could

here's hoping that if they continue to play the hackney numbers in the next tour he plays more guitar on them

more on topic is does nbc have this video in there vaults?

and how was the audio recorded would it be possible to remix it into stereo or is it just mono?

i know the chance of this being released officially is next to nothing but a man can dream

maybe if they do a re-release of the some girls texas show this could be added to the special features or a documentary on the album itself like stones in exile

50 year SNL anniversary this year - would be a hell of a Get to have them back. Maybe if they need to publicize a tour announcement…

Don’t think much of Jagger here on guitar.Sounds very rudimentary and rigid.Hes okay on ballads. His guitar playing on fast numbers detracts from Wood and Richards

It may have been far more interesting for fans like us, and for the cast and crew that got to attend. It was a big deal for them; I think Bill Murray has spoken about that day, and maybe other SNL alumni who were there. Everything stopped when the band got to the studio and it was considered a very exclusive room for this rehearsal. There are accounts of the day in one or more books that have been written about SNL.

But for the national viewing audience, watching at midnight on one of only three network broadcast channels at that time, this would have been too raw or esoteric. Lorne Michaels was (and likely still is) a huge Stones fan, but he still had the NBC brass and censors to contend with, and a show to put on the air. (The F-bomb in "Respectable" would not have gone down too well.)

I tried to work up some steam for an SNL spot at the beginning of the Hackney Diamonds tour...tried to weave some SNL and Stones history together. See here:

They'd probably be wondering what I was the first time I saw this - and again just now - where and what the hell is Ronnie doing!!!??

Nice little run through of Summer Romance.

Thank you, ProfessorWolf; I did notice that, and I appreciate it! Fun to toy around with these ideas, innit?

Hey deardoctortake1, would love to hear more about the experience (if you remember it much). It sounded like the place to be in NYC. I remember seeing a fantastic photograph from the very exclusive SNL after-party, Mick and Keith and maybe Gilda Radner, looking every bit of the stoned, chic, gritty, fabulous 70's cultural mavens they all were then. It seemed like everyone lived in NYC at that time, but the Stones owned NYC! Lots of folks had tales of running into one of them at a late-night deli or bar on the Upper West Side or down in the Village. (At one time, Mick and Ronnie lived only a few blocks away from each other, just off Riverside Drive, from W. 78th to W. 81st Streets.)
