In 1981, Mick was introduced to emerging NYC painter Jean-Michel Basquiat while he was occupying the basement of Annina Nosei Gallery in NYC. Mick is confirmed to have bought several paintings that year and remained a fan of Basquiat for the remainder of Basquiats short life. It's presumable that Mick would have purchased other paintings or possibly commissioned works by Basquiat between their first meeting in 1981 and Basquiats death in 1988.
A great majority of Basquiats known paintings have been cataloged by his estate and when possible, previous and current owners are documented. But there are no publicly documented Basquiat paintings owned by Mick, nor is there a record of him ever selling any. I know Mick did show off some of his artwork at Downe House in the documentary "Being Mick", but not Basquiat.
Just wondered if any superfans who have studied this aspect of Mick happen to know what Basquiat paintings he owns or if he has ever displayed them in pictures or documentary. Obviously Google turns up nothing or I wouldn't be asking here. Any help is much appreciated.
A very long time ago, at Milanese Triennale were displayed works co-made/ co-painted by Andy Warhol and Basquiat. The exhibition also presented personal objects of the Artists that had been re-worked by the two friends. I clearly remember a leather jacket of Basquiat painted by Warhol. On top of that, a lot of pictures and copies of Interview were displayed. I was pleased to see pictures of Mj with Basquiat while I was used to see him in pictures with Warhol. That said, nothing was told about MJ and Basquiat’s art. I have Warhol’s diaries somewhere, I will check, if I can find the book…
