Just thinking about the when the best 5 year period was to witness any music act in their primes.

From the stones to zeppelin,hendrix,floyd,doors,beatles,who,woodstock,etc...

Has there ever been a better time period?

In general I think you're right, but . . .

it'd be hard to see The Beatles after Candlestick Park (1966), unless you had access to a rooftop near the rooftop concert.

Jimi died in 1970, so not really much to see in 1971-72.

Floyd only released Dark Side of The Moon in 1973, so maybe parts of Meddle would be worth hearing but, I'm not sure I'd want to see an entire concert.

And you left out Elvis.
Elvis in 1968-69 would've been the last chance to see the man alive IMHO.

Thank ya, thank ya verry much.

Just might have to agree with you on that one. There were a lot of bands at that time was very good live . The Stones were head and shoulders above eveyone live at the time . There was such a magic feel everywhere they played. I saw Led Zepplin before they turned to shit live. The first time I saw them the played like they really wanted to be there and play . Just excellent . Then came Jimmy Page with a bow and other strange stuff and a never ending Bonham solos. They got very boring. When Bonham went into his act I went out for a smoke,a beer and even had time to drain the sea monster . They guy was just warmimg up by the time I got back . The WHO were fun . Traffic was very good. Another one I liked very much was B.B King and the Almon Brothers Band. B.B cam out after he opened the show and played with them. That was excellent. B.B And The ABB were both into it . But as many show as I have seen nothing. And I mean nothing will top the STONES in MSG in 72 and 75 also. I have never heard a band sound like that before or since . But I guess since it was in NY they wanted to strut there stuff and they did. And I was glad I was glad I was there to see it.

ya i agree 2 ,its somewhere around that time , + or - a few years- beatles, stones, wings, who & zep YA, but even the 2nd tier bands so 2 speak were incredible in concert in those days , mountain , humble pie , deep purple & jeff airplane = WOW, also crosby stills nash ,the BYRDS, mott the hoople , 10 yrs after , steppenwolf , alice cooper , j. geils , faces ,& my biggest downer here is i didn't c big BOB until 78 ,& Dylan throughout 60s & early 70s was like the music god ,not only 2 fans , but 2 fellow superstars ,im glad i lived it ,even though my hearing sucks

true about bob, chippy - but he didn't tour at all during this era - one of the anomalies about the golden era. I always thought it was interesting that none of the big 3 of the sixties (Bob, Stones, Beatles) was at either of the most defining 60's festivals - Monterey, Woodstock.

What I remember, the best shows I have seen around that time, and which I still remember vividly, included ofcourse the Stones in Amsterdam 1970 (my forst, what can I say), but certainly also the Byrds at Kralingen (not allowed to stop!)and also the Amsterdam Concert Gebouw (what a venue! And Clarence White, wow!), and the Grateful Dead in the same Amsterdam Concertgebouw (5 hrs!). Those three surely top my list. Totally different genres and atmosphere, but extremely good music and driven musicians, and also fun. I must be an old fart but I sure miss those days!

Jos:

When I was about fourteen, I was listening to the "Mr Tambourine Man" and "Younger Than Yesterday" albums all the time--Crosby-era Byrds. I was volunteering at a church and this guy who I revered (early twenties) who was also working there gave me a series of tapes of the Byrds--"Live in Amsterdam, 1970."

When I heard "Willin'" and "Black Mountain Rag" and "My Back Pages/Baby, What You Want Me To Do?" I simply could not believe it. Amazing stuff.

God Bless Clarence White--too soon gone.

Also: Isn't the Amsterdam 1970 Stones show the one at which Stephen Stills sat in with the Stones? On piano?

The music was raw, motown was hot, drugs were plentiful and potent, hair was long and greasy, nobody cared about school, playgrounds were full of people hanging out, 8 tracks were eatin tapes.

Deep Purple, Yes, Humble Pie (in my opinion, Live at the Fillmore is one of the best live rock shows recorded), Zappa, Donovan, Cream, Lee Michaels, etc...

Just plug in and play loud!!

I vote for 71-75. I think the best Who was 75. The Stones lotus stage and giant cock were in 75. Skynyrd was on top of their game. Zep toured. In general, stronger years than 68, 69, 70.
