It’s funny how people rate a show by a bootleg. I’ve heard numerous bootlegs f the same show. Some sound great and others sound like crap. Same show. You have to be at every show same location to judge and that still isn’t a given. It’s like judging a woman’s personality by her picture.

Sound of a bootleg does not define the quality of the show. There are crappy sounding bootlegs but you hear the band is on fire. And there are excellent sounding bootlegs where you can hear that the show was a trainwreck.

well, how you rate a show might be influenced by the quality of a recording and/or (in case you have been to the show) by your mood at that praticular day, side events (like meeting nice people or have someone standing next too you singing out of tune along all the time etc).

But the main problem is that only few people in this thread point out any reasons why they rate one show high than another.

Just not true at all. There are many total shite recordings where you can still here the band is on fire.

In fact, the best shows of the 1972 tour all sound like crap -Mobile, Akron, Norfolk, Washington. Only Charlotte sounds decent.

Check Berlin 1973 -recorded in the toilets at the back of the venue, but it's an even better show than Brussels.

In 1972-73, you'd be hard pressed to name a bad show regardless of quality. They were playing at such a high level back then that you could throw a dart at almost any show and argue it as the best of that tour.

Conversely, it's much easier to pick out the bad from the good these days thanks to the improvements in audience taping and the ability to capture IEM / soundboard feeds. Both Desert Trips shows are available in stellar quality, but no way would I consider them 'best of' shows.

The reviews at IORR paint a pretty good picture of which modern shows are truly special, but even that aggregate could be colored by the overall experience as opposed to the music itself.

My choice for Zurich being the best of 2017 is mostly influenced by my listening to the show (it's the best quality recording of the tour along with Stockholm, which was regarded as subpar in several reviews) and reading reviews which praise Keith's playing. But I also don't care for 2017 as a whole, so others may be able to judge them better than me.

With over 60 years of recordings to choose from, everyone is going to have a different opinion of the best shows and what constitutes such high praise. How blessed are we that we can continue to discuss this band as living, breathing entity?

Had to say unless you actually attended every show, or almost every show, on a tour. And what makes a good show depends on a lot of things, tangible and intangible. But some I've heard discussed as standouts:

1989: Seems like the LA shows were special

1990: IDK about the crowd, but the playing in Japan was great

1994: The NYC show early on that was release as VHS was pretty good; have seen good clips from Oakland

1995: The London shows were reportedly superb with good crowds

1997: I attended show #2 in Chicago & it's my favorite of the 15 concerts I've attended. Great set list, new tour with great stage, something in the air, good night with the skyline in the background, etc.

1998: Probably MSG, their first time back there in ages

1999: I don't know. I attended Hartfort 2 and it was ok. Tapes of San Jose are quite good. I'm sure the London shows were good.

2002: Chicago 1 I attended and was very solid, but vote for Wiltern show.

2003: Paris theater?

2005: Saw several shows that fall. Boston 2 or Atlanta, I think.

2006: Shine a Light shows, probably.

2012: London 2

2013-present: harder to sort, but Chicago 3 (2013) Kansas City (2015) & Jacksonville (2019) were all shows I saw and were all great

Atlantic City '06 blows away the Beacon shows. It may well be Keith's best show of the entire century. Giants Stadium and Zilker are also better shows.

I find the Beacon shows to be amongst the worst ever shows by the Stones....

Worst ever is a bit of a far strech but it might be among the worst ones they have released.

I think Mick and Charlie are great and they are saving the whole thing, the guitar department is really sloppy. And the audio to picture mix doesn't help either.

As an IORRer from the Land of the Rising Sun, it makes me feel tad sad to see the shows in Japan not given enough credit here, presumably because of the logistical difficulty, inaccessibility in general, the relative small number of attendees from abroad etc.

The Rolling Stones played 39 shows in total in Japan 1990-2014 and I attended 20 of them. Below are the shows I thought were particularly good among those I saw in person. Hope this will give some clues and better recognition to the folks here.

1990: Tokyo 2/16 and 26
1995: Fukuoka 3/23
1998: Tokyo 3/14, Osaka 3/20 and 21
2003: Tokyo 3/10 (Budokan) and 15 (Dome)
2006: Tokyo 3/24
2014: Tokyo 3/6

3/24/06 is easily a top 5 Bang show for the entire tour.

That’s quite a praise, really. I’m glad I was there.

Yes, it was a great show. To tell you the truth, I’m not a fan of the Bang Tour — the stage set was too lavish for my taste, so much so that it even gave me a tacky impression. Vegas tour gone too far. I only caught two shows, Tokyo 3/24 and Nagoya 4/5 (a rather sloppy performance).

That being said, 3/24 beat any Dome show of the Licks Tour Japan 2003 — I attended all of 4 Dome shows + Budokan — in my estimation. It was a typical Mick-driven night and his stamina that enabled him to be running around on the enormous stage for more than 2 hours was nothing but impressive. I was floored.

Other than 3/24, I heard that Sapporo 3/29 was another great show. And folks here know how good Saitama 4/2 was via TV broadcasted material.

The 2017 tour as a whole was underwhelming. Zurich being the best isn't saying much, but it's the most well played show and probably the best set list of the tour. Keith did his best playing of the tour at that show.

The best setlist must have been Hamburg. Not Keith's best show, though.

Great setlist and great company too. For a start they opened with Sympathy - not sure if they ever did that before or after. Then we got Out Of Control, Just Your Fool and Ride 'Em On Down, Play With Fire, Under My Thumb and this gem -

Wow that's a brilliant screw up!

Not sure about "best"...but the O2 shows wrapping up the European schedule in 2007 were pretty good.

2007 was Weird. Very very bad in the beginning but really good in the end.

Well, Keith was kind of back by the end...

...they got rid of that imposter with the 'tache grinning smiley

[to be fair he'd a lot going off over those recent months]

Bang isn’t really my favorite tour, either. The Giants Stadium show I saw on the first leg was the worst Stones show I’ve ever seen (not bad, but does not measure up to the other three).

3/24/06, however, is totally a worthy show, as is the previous show on the 22. Bitch is one of the best live versions out there, plus a the Rambler-Shelter twofer (both rare on that tour) and a ripping Jack Flash (Flash was great on the Bang Tour.)

My Top 5 for the Bang tour:

1. Atlantic City ‘06
2. Giant Stadium ‘06
3. Hartford ‘05
4. Tokyo 2 ‘06
5. Radio City

I will mention Rotterdam June 5, 1982 as a great concert in extreme heat.

Thinking of Chicago 2013, I remembered the very past pacing on JJF on those nights, just look at this video, this is high energy: (even though bad quality)

In 2003 the best show was easily Cirkus Stockholm. Just check the reviews here at Iorr, it was the also the best show I've ever attended with the lads. They were Amazing that night! In 2017 I would say that Paris III was the best. 2022 Stockholm along with Waldbühne.
In 2007 I would rate Copenhagen as the best,Keith was on Fire! In 2006 I would rate Paris as the best, great energy!

Some old latter day favorites are Las Vegas 99, Roseland Ballroom 02, Vredenburg 03, Vienna 06, the GRRR TV concert is also great.

Also there’s a few tv specials that should be mentioned…. Like MTV Live At The 10 Spot from the late 90s.
