I could only come up with four
that I would consider worthy of
mention, as follows:

1. "Tatoo You"
2. "Emotional Rescue"
3. "Steel Wheels"
4. "Blue and Lonesome"

No idea .

I've always been rubbish at this.

It changes on an almost weekly basis.

I always find it interesting when folks on these pages say that they haven't listened to such and such an album for years.

I tend to spin pretty much everything on a fairly regular basis and it's surprising how often even the older records manage to elicit a new reaction from me with some aspect or other.

I think that, sometimes, when stating that we don't like this and don't like that...we should maybe give it another listen with open ears and mind.

[ ..and What's wrong with DW if you're in the mood for some raucous guitar music ? ]

OK...as you've asked the question (and I don't lieeeee), one thing wrong with DW is Mick's SINGING IN ALL CAPS.

The other is the quality of the writing.

I've not digested Hackney and Lonesome enough for a placement. Alot of it depends on the production - the directness, dirtyness, looseness and riskyness of the effort.

TY
ER
UC
DW
BB
BB
SW
VL - having a hard time with it's clean 'silent' production...

I do have a question and this is not asking you to "justify" anything as we like what we like.

It's more that you have Tattoo You and Dirty Work at the same level...I can personally understand the relative disdain for Dirty Work but wonder what it is about Tattoo You that turns you off?

Just very curious. Thx Witness.

treacle, look at thread page 8 in the album thread for TATTOO YOU, if you like.

Oh lovely, an Easter egg!

And spending a few minutes doing some Easter egg hunting lo and behold, I came across this quote...and I do understand your not wanting to revisit this - too triggering!:

Quote
Witness
In a less positive approach than before the weekend:

Start Me Up ----- to me Stones-by-numbers. Not bad, but cheap and therefore slightly irritating, where e.g Highwire is only good
Hang Fire ----- the good punkish song from studio outtakes ruined in this arrangement and with those doo-doo's.
Slave ------ following the two opening songs, not working on me, might have been a good song on BLACK AND BLUE, e.g instead of "Melody"
Little T&A ----I am not so keen on that one either
Black Limousine ---- one rather redeeming song, without being in any way great
Neighbours ---- I found that quite banal, too
Worried About You ---- it is OK, but to me nothing more in the studio version
Tops ---- only "Melody" I like less of Stones music
Heaven ---- it's probably OK, but for me would have needed another setting
No Use in Crying ----- in spite of all preceding tracks, I quite like this one, which tells about some quality
Waiting on a Friend ----a gem good enough to be part of any Stones album, on condition of fitting stylistically, best and possibly only suited on GOATS HEAD SOUP.

An album that clearly is better than DIRTY WORK, but all the same gets on my nerve in a way that DIRTY WORK does not, after I only come through the first two songs, when that album is only relatively weak in the context of Stones music.

To me "Start Me Up" is even the mother of all Stones-by-numbers songs. As such, this is made even worse by that song also being a warhorse.
On the other hand, I may add that a concert version of "Neighbours" in an old bootleg, in contrast to this studio version, I do like. But that fact does not improve the studio version for me.

Voodoo Lounge - *** 1/2 - Love is Strong
Bridges to Babylon - **** - Out Of Control
A Bigger Bang - *** - Laugh I Nearly Died
Blue and Lonesome - *** 1/2 - Commit a Crime

Well if you insist on being an agitator, then I think we can include "Easy Sleazy" as the shoulda been Stones-recorded standalone single. And...no key tracks?

If we're including "Easy Sleazy," then all of Mick and Keith's solo works count. I couldn't limit myself to one key track. I love all these albums.

I am a bit embarassed not to have given Lonesome much playtime, barely know it and for Hackney, I need to revisit it after a good pause to see what I feel about it.

I recall when SW and VL came out, how I really wanted to love them and played them alot, but nowdays they don't get exposure with me. Maybe I should revisit them again with fresher ears, though it feels like a chore to do...tongue sticking out smiley

I did the same with both albums when they came out, and enough to know I still love Steel Wheels and feel a bit indifferent to VL, though it has some spectacular cuts (as every Rolling Stones album does - even DW has one!).

Wow! This thread had ‘circle jerk’ written all over it but most posters resisted the urge to whip it out. Bravo!

I state emphatically that HD doesn’t belong in the top 3 and the majority of posters agree. TY, ER and UC – there’s your top 3, no need to start a poll. Oh, a few kooks will always put Dirty Work on top, but hey, it takes all kinds. I myself am not completely immune to making extravagant claims about records. For example, I know TY is better quality but I rate ER higher because it was my first Stones record. So if somebody slips, say, Steel Wheels, into the top 3 because it was their first Stones record, ok, it’s a pardonable offence. But nobody on this forum can say HD was their first Stones record and therefore it completely irrational to rank HD in the top 3. Of course, there is no penalty or fine for being irrational. I just hope you’re less reckless in other aspects of your life.

1. Emotional Rescue (5.0) Let Me Go
2. Tattoo You (5.0) Start Me Up
3. Undercover (4.5) Undercover of the Night
4. Voodoo Lounge (3) The Worst
5. Dirty Work (2.5) Sleep Tonite
6. Steel Wheels (2) Mixed Emojis
7. Bridges to Babylon (2) You Don’t Have to Mean It
8. Blue & Lonesome (2) Little Rain
9 HD (1.5) WWW
10. ABB (1) Rough Justice
