Charlie interview on Virgin U.K Radio - "We'll Tour Again"
Posted by: Adrian-L ()

from NME.COM:-

The band hint that they won't stop hitting the road.
The Rolling Stones have hinted that they will keep on
touring after their current world jaunt wraps up.

When asked whether this live jaunt was the Stones' last, drummer
Charlie Watts said: " I said "yes it is" in 1966.I remember coming down the stairs on an aeroplane and being asked. Yes it is, but no it won't be.I don't know - i don't care if it is, or if it isn't".

"If i'm standing at the end of Europe which is the last leg at the moment and they offer something else i imagine we'll say "yes" and off we'll go", he added.
"What is hard is doing these things for a year long- they are quite tiring, being away that long"

Speaking on Virgin Radio, Watts also revealed what would happen if one of the band died.

"If any of us dropped over we'd carry on", he said. "I think with Mick- Mick and Keith- it would be difficult to carry on but me or Ronnie, i think they could get deputies quite easy. I don't know it would ever be the same. THe Who was never the same without Keith Moon, mainly because Keith was such a character."
" I don't mean i am like that, but it is a different Who. It is getting a bit late in the day, if anything did happen I'd call it a day, well i'd call this band a day. I don't think you could do it without Mick and you couldn't do it without Keith. They're such strong characters"

He certainly speaks openly and honestly.

Virgin Radio has an hour special, with each Stone, every night at 7pm, this week.

Mon 5th (in conversation with Russ Williams)...Keith
Tues 6th.......................................Ronnie
Wed 7th........................................Charlie
Thurs 8th......................................Mick

i missed last nights, Keith interview, anyone catch it?

If Charlie says they will not stop I guess you can take it to the bank!

without Charlie, it would not be the same !! I'm sure Mick and Keith would finally stop touring as the Rolling Stones. If Charlie had gone 20 years ago, it would be different. But now they have reached 60, Charlie is so popular that nothing would be the same

So did I. The tickets were surprisingly cheap, coming in at the (I think you'll agree) bargain price of my firstborn child. I realise that there are some of you out there who think that's a bit much, but HEY, it's the Stones, and we should be thankful that they're still doing it...

If Charlie quits or dies, they shouldn't tour as the Stones anymore. Call it the Mick and Keith show, call it anything but the Stones.

For the real fans yes.

For Rolling Stones Inc. definitely no. You don't expect them to call themselves "The Rolling Stones without Charlie Watts", do you?

Charlie is a nice guy, he would not want to hurt Mick's or Keith's feelings by saying they could go on without one of them. I think it would be very very hard for Keith to carry on without Mick since he is such a lazy guy himself.

But I believe Mick would even try to carry on with the great name if Keith would leave or die. And why not. At the moment it may be blasphemy but imagine (and the day will come) Keith or Mick will die - would you really want the rest to stop?

I see a time in 2040 when Bernard Fowler, Darryl Jones, Blondie Chaplin and Matt Clifford will tour, being billed as "The Rolling Stones Band"... the name is too good (marketingwise). The children of Brian Jones and Ronnie Wood are already recording, also some of Jaggers daughters have sung... there will be some new shit like the children of John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Tim Buckley, Pete Townshend, Loudon Wainwright... they will all want their share.

I would have agreed with this statement until I read and saw the interviews Keith has given on the subject recently. It's pretty clear from those that Mick & Keith would/will move the Stones forward even without their beloved drummer.

Sorry guys, I'd take it real personal if the Boys "moved forward" without Charlie. He's a F---king cornerstone for god's sake! If it was 1976 and Charlie left or whatever-yeah no problem, but IMHO take it on into the sunset-have some respect for where you started and where you traveled. Just one poor man's view...

i agree, crossfire. In fact, I thought it was in poor taste that KR even suggested the idea this year (don't always have to say what you're privately thinking, you know). Couldn't have made CW feel too good.

He's talkin much too much in the last months...

I think if either Mick,Keith or Charlie shuffle off this mortal coil,it would be time to call it a day.

However,I think they may be tempted to carry on without Charlie(I think that scenario will depend on Keith)

Without Mick or Keith the Stones are dead - end of story.

I'm impressed with your optimism, Ged! I didn't realize it was an "if" proposition!

Good point, but maybe they'll outlive us all.

I read an interview quite recently where Keith said he wouldnt carry on if he, Mick and Charlie werent all there. It was quite notable that he omitted Ronnie. Personally, I reckon if any of em dropped out now the band would fall apart

letitloose - not sure which interview you're speaking of - but in several '05 interviews KR has flat out stated that he and Mick would carry the band forward if/when Charlie passed.

Are you guys delusional?

We all like Charlie but you can't pretend he is an integral part of the band.

If Charlie was replaced tommorow nobody would be able to tell the difference, It's not like you can see him, anyhow.

Mick is irreplaceable and I suppose Keith is too (purely for appearance sake) ...but that's all.

Come on guys, Charlie is irreplaceable and Ronnie is to!!!!
Maybe the latter isn't in guitar playing these days (mind you that i am a big Ronnie fan!) but as a member of the stones he is irreplaceable!!!

The only problem could occur is that if Charlie or Ronnie would for some reason not be with the band, Mick and Keith would still bill it as the Stones because the general public would have no idea if there is another drummer or guitar player on stage.

I saw Status Quo last month and i had no idea that they weren't with the original line up and frankly i couldn't care less because i have no idea who the orinigal members are. I knew the singer/guitar player by face and i knew the other guitar player by face but the other guys... I had no idea who they were. And i can't say if they sounded better then when they were with the original members or worse. To me it was an awesome concert. Summarising, the general public still thinks it is the legendary stones on tour because they don't know the "other" guys besides Mick and Keith!!!!

Cheers,
Wuudy

Bianca,

delusional? That be you dearwinking smiley There's no pretending about how integral Charlie Watts is to the Rolling Stones. He's one of the most accomplished drummers in music-yes kinda of makes him integral.

My perspective is more about all the elements that make up this great history of this great band. Charlie's an equal component in my book. Take him away and you close the shop-- all things considered.

BTW- listen to A Bigger Bang and tell me who's cranking the engine?

It is very gracious of Charlie to say this stuff, but I would pray that they would call it a day if he was not there. Just as integral as Mick and Keith to my ears.

If something happens to Charlie, then it will no longer be "The Rolling Stones"... it will be the "Mick and Keith Show"... big difference.

There are plenty of great drummers in the world... they would probably get Max Weinberg to sit in... but you can't duplicate the chemistry... I have no idea how to define or explain "chemistry", I just know that it exists.

The band changed after Bill Wyman left... though that doesn't mean the change was bad.
