How anyone can complain about the relatively generic 1981 shows compared to the slop of 1975/76 is beyond me.

I attended the Philly opener in 81 and the Hartford show...had a blast, but saw the Who around the same period and thought they were a better live band. Still, the Stones remained my favorite band.

In 89 I saw them at Shea...I was stunned by how much better they were. Much more energy in my opinion. Then on Voodoo Lounge at RFK...incredible. Since then, on No Security, 40 Licks...they seemed to slip just a bit, but still as good or better than 81. 3 shows od ABB and I'd say the quality is somewhere around Steel Wheels and VL. A little less production and back up...which is good.

81's saving grace is that it's the last somewhat "raw" sounding tour...I still think it marked the beginning of the more corporate band.

The guitars were surely better then, but the sound system was 1/10th of ABB's. Mick's voice is soooo much better now. Charlie's always been steady and great.

First of all, the first post in this thread is confusing.

Are you talking about "The 1975 Tour of the Americas"? Because the 1981 was not the Tour of the Americas. Or are you just talking about the 1981 U.S. Tour?

Thanks Local27 - what a man you are....to get so angry at my comments just shows what type of person you are.

As Sam Cutler would say - "go away please"...

To Here it Comes - yes I'm talking about the '81 Tour...I probably should not have put the "Tour of Americas' bit in...

As is always the case, these are only my opinions after listening to the many soundboards that have appeared recently.

Hi all! I really liked the 81 tour, Hampton 81 is my favourite show ever, for those of you that don't have it you need to get it.
There were problems with the tour though. I love the guitars but Micks vocals could be pretty bad as could Keiths backing vocals. There are many soundboard recordings that vary in quality a great deal. The ones that are mixed properly such as Hampton 81 and the 4 cd 'Ride Like The Wind' are brilliant examples of how good they could be in 1981. On a lot of the poorer soundboards the vocals are too high in the mix. If you love the Stones but you're not a 1981 fan then steer clear of the mono soundboards and stick to the shows broadcast on the radio in stereo. Get 'Ride Like The Wind' CD's!!

disagree - some of the soundboards are fabulous - Seattle, Hartford, Meadowlands....these are far better listens than Hampton or Ride Like the Wind, IMO. Raw, in yo face...pure unadulterated r'n'r.....

I really enjoyed being outside in the sunshine. What a party atmosphere it was!
Also I'm sure we all miss Ian Stewart greatly.

Indeed, I´m just listening to Dallas (Oct. 31st), what a great sound and show!

Bored is just a wrong word to describe R&R!

Agree with you, they played Rock an allot of Roll during that tour, they also sounded blues to me, comparring with the Steel Wheels tour, there was more time to improvice for the band.

It's the playing, not the setlist (in opposite to today as the playing is very weak we need to compensate by setlist).

1981 was pure rock'n'roll (if not punk) and they didn't need a 9 man backing band to back them up. Still a lot of musicians were influenced by Stones up to then.

The magic ends with the 89 crap of synties and background singer and horn sections (for some it ends of course when Brian left). But I guess most here became fans when they start to be a big band...

never get bored with the '81-'82 tour....in fact, it get's better with age....like the raw energy of the band....and the some girls & tattoo you tracks work great on this tour....they let it fly then (something lost along the way)

78 was the worst tour by Far. All the pissing and mouning amazes me if they are playing that bad how do they keep selling out at thes prices?

Two weeks ago i saw "Let's Spend The Night Together" video (american tour 1981) once again. The occasion of this watch was a "strange" opinion of my little sister. After seeing the same video she said that the Stones in the 1981 "sounded truly bad, in comparison with the Stones of 1989- 2005 period". After watching "LSTNT" once again i have to admit that contrary to the great concert at Sun Devil Stadium (marvellous versions of "Under My Thumb", "LSTNT", "Time Is On My Side"), in the arena the band sounded truly weak. Guitars loud but very often frivolous. Mick's singing sometimes out of the tune. So, my little sister who appreciates the Stones TODAY (despite some "nostalgic fans") without being a band's fan is not 100% crazy...

No, Tod, I get it! I was at the 78, 81, 89,94,97,99,02 & 05 shows. I certainly appreciate the rock and roll attitude of the 81 shows, but from a musical viewpoint, the two tours do not compare. It is okay to prefer the 81 tour, but you can't really believe it was superior than the 89 tour on any musical level.

No matter how badly you and Sam Cutler want me to "go away please", it's never going to happen. Get used to it. See you in the forums "pal".

I am so very biased towards the 78 tour. I thought that version of Beast of Burden was the best. The guitars were crisp and the riff was incredible. The 81 guitars have that muddy sound and that damn sax of Watts dominates the song.

81 was superior on EVERY level except the choreography. 89 was the nadir of the Stones live act...and a very low nadir at that.

Ahh phuk up you dickhead Local27 - 'paaaalll'.
Go have a cyber armwrestle with someone else tough guy.

As for 1981/2 - Charlie is the worst offender of all on this tour.

His drumming is crap.

LSTNT, SMU, HTW, Satisfaction to name a few - all have specific drumming patterns and he plods thru all of them with the same "tippity tap" crap on his high hat.

Only time he sounded there was when they covered "Going to a go go" - cos the bass drum was there more than just bewteen tiipity tappying.

It has it's moments - UMT, SSC, TIOMS and others.
But the execution of songs like BOB and SMU are terrible.
Keith and Ronnie should have simply been gagged from back up vox post 1973.

Mick's vox were spewed not sung and the guitar sounds at time were putrid.
It was loose and guitar, guitar, but it's not the best tour.

Bill rocked however.
I miss him.

Have you ever lent somebody $20 and never seen them again? It was probably worth it.

It is true that 89 showed a better show, that had been downhill ever since. some 81/82 shows are fantastic including Hampton. I wish there was a video of some of the first handfull of shows of 81 that must have been the best.

I love the 81 tour and see it as their last great one. It was pure rock without a safety net. And I think Ernie Watts' playing was fantastic. He was one of the few guest musicians who stepped into the spotlight and was fully up to it. Whether he was soloing, riffing, or meandering through the song like on Imagination, it was all brilliant. Wonderful sound, great lines & ideas. Truly a great addition to the art of weaving.

I agree with flairville however that one should take the stereo soundboards as a measure. The mono sb's sound just too crowded and overloaded. I have stopped collecting them. But on Hampton Watts just steals the show along with Bill.

Thanks for the tips on the stereo soundbds. I can't recall at the moment if I have any... I'll check and look out for them if I don't.

Is Jersey Devil from Hampton?

Jersey devil is from Meadowlands, New Jersey. Don't know if it's a stereo sb or not since I haven't heard it. But by all means get Hampton (18 dec). It might very well be the best show from the Wood era.
