The lines about Jagger in the song are pretty funny “Jack be nimble,Jack be quick,Jack Flash sat on a candle stick, because fire is the devil’s onlyfriend”.

funny but annoying and preachy.

I was nearly seven years old when it hit the charts, and I have positive memories from that time of it as a song it was okay to turn up in the car when my mom was driving.

It’s his best played song. The rest of what I’ve heard was lightly arranged, somewhat treacly Folk-Pop.

Had it on 7" as a kid, I have to assume it was an edited, shortened version. But I still love it, it's always on my ipod and gets a listen every once in a while.

I had same. If I remember correctly on the one I had they split the song onto A & B side so you had to flip it over halfway through.

Strange, but true. Funny thing is that I'm not even sure it was necessary to release it that way. Isn't there a nine-minute Guns N' Roses song (November Rain?) that they were able to fit on one side of a 7" 45 rpm single?

Yes, I think that was correct, side A for the 1st 1/2, side B for the 2nd 1/2. The G'N'R song was many years later, I think they had better equipment by then, for being able to fit more on a 7". Just a guess ...

I think it was more like he didn't have any material for the B side and was being kind of a rebel by releasing the entire song instead of what they typically did back then: edit it down to a three and a half minute version for the single. But the Pt 1/Pt 2 thing wasn't new, it had been done many times before and since. Even Archie Bell and the Drells Tighten Up had a part 2 on the B side of the single.

And perhaps, most famously of all, Stevie Wonder's "Fingertips" Parts I and II, where the hit single was actually on the B-side.

McLean should've driven to the levee on the east (left) side here - might've changed his mind.
17th Street Canal levee breach.

Used to ride bike across that bridge that on the bottom of the image from UNO campus and all way down to Treasure Chest Casino along the lake. Old good times. Before the storm...

If I ever run into McLean I'm gonna drag him to a levee and hold his head down at the bottom of the batture (unless it's along a canal, of course) and ask him to recite his ridiculous line, maybe he'll change it to a positive aspect.
