First to break the sound barrier, test pilot extraordaire. The book and movie about him and others, "The Right Stuff" are very good.

I've only just seen this in the UK free newspaper,The Metro which I pick up every day from the train station.
I remember the name and they had a great review of his life ,and of course breaking the sound barrier in 1947.
As a youngster back in the 60's it was amazing to read all these amazing things happening in our world ,in the weekly comic's that were bought by us young kids.
Sounds like he had a great life and lived to the great age of 97.
R.I.P. Chuck.
