Gazza, your post nailed exactly what I was trying to say. In 1981 they did a great job with the set list. They always did when starting a new tour in the past in seems. In 75 the If You Can't Rock Me/Cloud medly was a great way to perform a new and old song. I also agree that more people would know old Stones hits than covers at a Stones show. Who doesn't know As Tear Go By, Mother's Little Helper, Under My Thumb... but as a Stones fan these are pretty much rarities when it comes to going to see a Stones show. Yet they were hits.

Gazza, I'm a player of Naggers United myself (look at my shirt)

They have a great new album out, why do they play only some alibi numbers of it?
When will we hear Won't Take Long, for instance?

I would imagine its more likely to occur during a 'ballad' part of the show, somehow...

Unless he's suddenly decided to sing it - hardly

I meant in the early part of the show where they'd normally play something like Ruby Tuesday or Wild Horses

J-J-F, try to remain cool...

You say: "stickydion, you are exactly the kind of person here I am talking about. I guess I can't judge their new tour after going to six shows because I am critical but you can because your views are positive and you have not seen them yet"

I could think "yes, i must be stupid if i discuss with an idiot". But i don't. I tell you once again: My conclusions are based on what i am hearing on the boots for the time being. The big majority of the reviews just are similar to my conlusions. Are not the reviews my criteria but the boots. I guess i have the right to judge the tour after hearing some boots, as anybody else. Don't be so confused. The words "Don't judge the tour before you see the shows" was a thread's title, not my opinion. Can you understand (atleast) this?

About the "new songs" and the counting: Thanks for yours confirmatory job!

1971: 4 songs from Sticky Fingers a night (oh, your argument about 1971 tour is "excellent"...)
1972: I wrote that they were playing 8 (as you say) and, if i remember correctly, sometimes even 9 songs from Exile.
1973: Ôhey were playing 5 or 4 songs from GHS a night. Have you discovered one or two shows which have included 6 new songs? Maybe. But i guess you mention the whole number- new songs played during the whole tour, not a night.
1975: 5 or 6 songs from IORR, which was their last album.
1976: 5 songs from B&B.
1978: 6 - 8 songs from SG
1981: as you say 6 songs grom TY.

OK...And i wrote about this tour that in my opinion "THE SONGS FROM ABB COULD BE 5, NOT MORE". Was Nov. 2, time 05:36, MY BLIND FANATIC... That's my opinion, i want some balance on the setlists. Some guys want 9 or 10 songs from ABB and they are calling it "demand for creativity". OK, they have the right to ask what they want. But what "great old tradition" of the Stones "breaks" the number of 4 or 5 (i hope soon) songs from ABB? Where is the ...huge difference between the so ...bad situation of today and the "great deal of their new album" on every old tour? Why must the 1972 and 1978 tour be the measures from everything in 2005?

You can say that in the 70s they sometimes were playing less than 18-19, even 16-17 songs and so the number of the new songs was actualy stronger. Yes, that's right. But be careful, this argument makes a good reason to say something positive for the Stones today, even they have help from other musicians since 1981...

You say to me "have some balls and form an opinion"!!?? Who do you think you are? You are so upset just you can't abide my opinion, MY POOR FASCIST! As i said, you are i blind fanatic, unable to understand simple thinks. Please, don't complain once again that i say you "can't judge their new tour".
Discussing with you is waste of time anymore.

I mention some lists (copied from a site). Everyone who cares can see everywhat he wants. How many new songs, how many older songs, etc.

what about the blind person who's been to shows.....does he/she qualify to judge a show?.......even though he/she only heard it

Hound Dog says

(a) "stickydion, they could play the same 22 songs a night this tour if they were creative about it. I don't care about the numbers because unless you go to all the shows you are not going to catch those 44 songs you mentioned."

Yes, but don't forget, a notable number of fans are going to 3,4, or even more shows during a tour. If the number of the different songs gets bigger, they have stronger hopes to listen something more. Just a personal example: In 2003, July, i went to see the Stones at Stade De France. After two weeks i went in Prague. The fact that i heard 5 different songs was real happiness for me! Of course the big majority is going to one only show. But if some "hardcore fans" are speaking in the name of a very poor minority who says "no JJF or HTW anymore", i guess i can speak in the name of a notable minority...

(b) "Every tour they have done new things. 2,000 Lights Years -88, Not Fade Away - 94, 95- all kinds of great old tunes. 97 Sister morphine, and so on.... They don't need to play 22 different songs each night but give us at least one surprise or something different from the previous tour."

MMmmmm....How many times they had played Sister Morphine in 1997? Honestly, i don't remember. OK, now we have songs from a new album (i hope they will be 5 a night- personaly i love "It Won't Take Long" and "Driving Too Fast"). We have covers (some fans like this stuff, others no). We have some songs rarely performed by the band in the recent past: Shattered, She So Cold, sporadicaly Heartbreaker etc. We have old songs like Get Out Of My Cloud, 19th Nervous Breakdown. If we want a stable list of "unusual" songs as a solid part of the whole setlist, we'll haven't variety, of course. If we want more "unusual" but alternate stuff, we'll have another kind of complaining: "@#$%&, i love As Tears Go By, they performed it only in Paris and in Barcelona. I was in Madrid where i heard 19th Nervous Breakdown. I give not a shit for this song...". Another "solution" could be the decicion "No more warhorses" or "only 2-3 warhorses". "Could be"?? In my opinion, no. Something like band's "suicide". I think the Stones on this tour are trying to find a balance between the different "solutions". That's not so easy...

(c) "Ok, now I am waiting for my verbal beating from you because I am critical."

I hope you are kidding, Hound Dog. I am not a malicious person (like J-J-F for example!!). As fan since 1973 (when i was 12), i have been critical many times. If you want an old example, i say: 1978 tour! The only truly bad tour, in my opinion - i know a lot of people disagree stronly, but... Do you want two recent examples? The $450 ticket prices and Mick's Knighthood...

Quite agree, a whole shitload of threads appear to represent the collective "moans and groans" of bored, impatient, frustrated, and evidently bad tempered Europeans who haven't made the effort to get their arses over to the States to see the Stones on this leg of the tour, and to be quite honest - are thus spectacularly ill qualified to comment on the shows and the performances.

another reason might be that the '71 tour was actually OVER before Sticky fingers came out - no real wonder they didnt play too many songs from it in what were very short concerts

yeah..the cheap bastards...smiling smiley. Imagine waiting a few months into a tour to see a show on the other side of the world. Most of them probably dont even have passports!

Funny - I got the impression that most of the loudest "moans and groans" on this thread were from fans that are based in the US - many of whom HAVE actually seen several shows.

Whether European, American, or other....by far the whiners have mostly NOT been to any shows or have been people who gauged the performance by their friends' reactions...dedicated fans willar largely be extremely pleased for sure...the Stones have their A game going on!

Sorry, i forgot to answer to Dandelion Powderman

You say "8 songs on my book" (from Some Girls, in the 1978)

DP, finaly sometimes were 8, sometimes 7, sometimes 6. For example,

In Lakeland, Florida, Civic Center, they played 6 songs from SG:
When The Whip Comes Down/Miss You/Beast Of Burden/Respectable/Far
Away Eyes/Shattered

In Washington, D.C., Warner Theater, they played 6 songs from SG:
When The Whip Comes Down/Just My Imagination/Miss You/Respectable/
Far Away Eyes/Shattered

In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, John F. Kennedy Stadium, they played 7 songs from SG:
When The Whip Comes Down/Miss You/Just My Imagination/Respectable/
Beast Of Burden/Far Away Eyes/Shattered

etc, etc, etc.

Honestly, first time i took a look to the 1978 statistics i saw two adjoining lists with 6 songs from SG. So was my impression that this had been the "rule". But there were 3 "rules", then.
