That was the opening sequence?? Wow. It doesn't sound like it matches the film. But IMO it shows Brian as a very adept writer. A pity. He would have done amazing work.

edit - I mean, he did do amazing work, but he would have shown the world a lot more. as his own man.

Yes, that first part is from the opening credits/scenes. It's just a screen shot image of course. Music fits the opening well if you watch it. That distinctive slide bit is a recurring part when the gun is shown through out the film.

Great to see the Courtfield Road footage. Anyone know who shot it?
Was it purely private footage or for a longer Stones documentary?
The scenes reminded me of the footage in the film Stoned'.
Is Charlie in the film? I saw Bill...with some ladies of course. Mick and Keith and Stash. Michael Cooper possibly. Any others?

It was shot by Rai - italian television.

Stash is not shown and neither is Charlie. Michael Cooper, Nikki Kramer are on the sofa. Some other people who I don't know.

Can someone with the 40 licks CD, perhaps the deluxe? version look in the booklet please?

Does the author of the accompanying text say who played what or is such information actually listed along with the song titles and writing credits?

You mean Stones songs in general? Are you familiar with Keno's overview of songs done by the Stones? He doesn't claim to be perfect, but it can be some help.

Avoid keno. grinning smiley

I am just looking to clarify whether the info is in the piece by the writer or the song credits?

Hey Philip,
I just could not locate your email address in my contacts; had to switch a while back and lost a bunch. Didn't want to start a new OT thread for something completely out of left filed either.
But I wonder if you have this answer. What is that freakin instrument in "Good Vibrations" that gives the song it's movement and throb? I don't know if you could call the pattern triplets; but it's in the lower register.
I was watching that footage of them in studio. Hal Blaine on drums. Who is that on organ and uprite bass? did not realize there were two basses on it.

The Good Vibrations studio footage is all rather staged after it had been recorded.

Recorded at Gold Star on 2/18/66 - take 28 is master and the engineer was Cal Harris

Drums - Hal Blaine
Percussion - Frank Capp
Fender Bass - Ray Pohlman
String Bass - Lyle Ritz
Guitars - Al Casey, Billy Strange
Piano - Don Randi
Organ - Larry Knechtel
Sax - Steve Douglas, Bill Green, Plas Johnson, Ray Migliori
Theremin - Paul Tanner

Note: It actually was not a Theremin being played but something simpler that Paul Tanner and inventor Bob Whitsell made. An instrument that made sounds similar to Leon Theremin's creation, but made it a lot simpler for non-experts to hit specific notes and control the volume.

Just to note. None of this is meant to undermine or shit on the majesty of the rest of the band. Merely to highlight what is a very misunderstood musician by both fans (sane and batshit crazy) and detractors.

Threads or posts like "I Want To Hear Brian" and so on are quite common on the Internets. A number of his own fans seem quite ignorant, wilfully so at times, of what he actually played. They'd credit him with the creation of the universe if they could get away with it.

Then there are many people like our very own Mathijs. He falls in to the detractor category. Brian can seemingly do no right in his ears. Always this belittling attitude and making sure to tell us he's just an amateur level musician etc.

Good information about Brian from a source with balanced views would be great.

The problem with most BJ focussed resources is that they follow the "Brian was lovely and the rest of the Stones were horrible" template.

With the mindset to once and for all really find out whether Brian was recorded for all of the set at the Rock and Roll Circus and if so what he played I spent time altering the mixes to isolate the guitars as best as possible. Finally found a good balance that lets us hear that Brian was indeed playing and recorded on all of the songs performed. I chose to not bother isolating No Expectations and Sympathy as what he plays there is quite obvious. Also, there are no overdubs on the official release. There is some mic bleed and staged introductions of different mics which creates the impression that there is more going on at times.

Listening with headphones is recommended.

...

Jumpin' Jack Flash

Brian's guitar is upon first and many more impressions later inaudible on the official release. However, within the mix Brian is heard playing. In this isolated mix you can hear Keith's brighter and more dirty guitar and Brian's very bassy more muffled guitar. Whether his tone was like that at the event or is just how it was mixed is open to debate. Some will mistake this for Bill's bass, but it's not. smiling smiley

Brian Jones - guitar (warm, bassy tone)
Keith Richards - guitar - (bright, bluesy distorted tone)

A demonstration showing the essentials of what Brian Jones played.

...

Parachute Woman

For many a year I have heard this 50's Rock and Roll rhythm part, but swayed from it being Brian to it being an overdub. Managing to isolate it a touch more and comparing with what Brian is shown playing allows me to conclude that it is indeed Brian playing. The piano sometime s gave impression he was playing higher when I was seeing him in the film playing the rhythm in first position.

Brian Jones - guitar (R&R rhythm)
Keith Richards - guitar - (Riffs and lead)

A demonstration showing the essentials of what Brian Jones played.

...

You Can't Always Get What You Want

Took awhile to suss this one out. In part due to the weirdness of the mix on the official release. The intro is stage mic wise. Just Keith, then Nicky and Brian, Mick etc. In this isolated mix we mostly hear what I assume are just Keith and Brian's own amp mics. Keith is heard on his own until 1:03 which is when Brian's guitar comes in. Tone wise it's similar to Jumpin' Jack Flash, but a bit less bassy.

Brian Jones - guitar (warm, bassy tone)
Keith Richards - guitar - (tremolo & bright, distorted tone)

I've always really liked this one. I'm unsure why they thought it not ready for Aftermath. It's preferable to a few of that LP's lesser-tracks.

*I've just re-read the thread: it's a Between the Buttons, outtake. I prefer Between the Buttons to Aftermath. I'm not sure what they could've omitted.
