Meglio tardi che mai...no shit! I could never figure out which came first: the Stones ignoring Italy, or Italy ignoring the Stones. From my angle there were always plenty hardcores in Roma. Fans with the right spirit! And I felt so slighted by the band that they never came. It would be great to see them in the ruins. Hope it's not such a mega affair that it just gets too big. I don't know...half a million folks sounds crazy.

I don't know!
If the stones are only slightly more popular than the yardbirds (who are not popular at all) is only because of statisfaction and Gianni Morandi's terrible "C'era un ragazzo che come me amava i Beatles e i Rolling Stones".
I think I already told you of this friend of mine who wanted to take a very hot very young chick to the stones concert at san siro in 2003 and gave her a ticket. "Great, the Cranberrys at the Rolling Stone" she said when he gave her the ticket (the Cranberrys were the supporting act and the Rolling Stone is a popular club here in milano). I think this tells it all.
But what is even more surprising is that the Stones are completely underrated also by Italian musicians (professionals and not). I've been playing fr more than 20 years now, first the piano and then the guitar, and I have found very very few people appreciating the stones.
Truly I never understood why.

didnt the stones record "as tears go by" with the lyrics in Italian...maybe they could dust that one off for the shows there...think it would go over well?

Yes, they did. Absolutely un-listenable!

The Stones doing "Con le mie lacrime" in Italian at a show in Italy would be the height of embarrassment and I would probably consider the unspeakable: taking out a contract on Jagger.

Sure Italy is Stonesland! Half a million or more in Rome. Circus field. Then at least one more show. Don't know where yet but it is bound to happen. The curse is over. san Siro was just the start, again...
