Complications from elective surgery- Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Michael Schenker Group, Ian Gillan, and Rory Gallagher among many others. Here is the (now) late great Ted McKenna tearing it up during Rory's encore at Montreux...

I'm lost for words creating this post. I lost my friend and comrade this morning. After what should have been a routine operation, there were complications, meaning Ted started hemorrhaging blood.Sadly the surgeons could not stop the bleeding.I spoke with Ted on Thursday, wished him good luck and told him we will speak on Saturday.I'm devastated.Ted was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet.A brilliant musician. He was a big man with a big heart, and he has left us all with a big hole in our lives. My thoughts are with Laura,Casey,Heather and Claire, and everyone who's lives were touched by the big man.RIP Ted from myself, Marcel,Davy, and all those musicains who had the pleasure of playing with one of the finest drummers of all time

Legendary drummer. This won't get nearly the respect it deserves.

He died allegedly from complications during hernia surgery. Wow, such a routine operation, like a rite of passage for middle-aged men. That's just awful. My sympathies to friends and family.

The Sensational Alex Harvey Band ROCKS! I wonder what ever happened to him/them. Did he pass away?

Such a very sad way to have departed this world.
Must admit I didn't recognise the name, but he is obviously a great musician and comes over as a great guy.
Been looking at some youtube clips and really good stuff.

RIP Ted ,and you will be greatly missed by so many people all over the world.

My first concert in Edinburgh, At the Usher Hall. I was struck down how much a showman [Alex Harvey] could control an Audience, It blew me away . Ted McKenna and his cousin Hugh provided the rhythm section. What an awesome live band opening with 'The Faithealer' I went on to see them at every opportunity. "Good evening Boy's and Girls - I would like to take this opportunity to introduce to my Band - The Sensational Alex Harvey Band .... Then right into faithealer. - Check out their live albums - 'LIVE 1975' & BRITISH TOUR 1976. - You won't be disappointed
