well, never mind.

Here in America, the expression "getting one's rocks off" is a male ejaculating. Hope that cleared things up. Apparently the guy in the song has erectile dysfunction of some sort. Just not while sleeping.

Get Your Ya Ya’s Out

I know it’s supposed to be the best live album ever, best thing the Stones have put out ,etc. To me it’s just an average at best album. I purchased it sometime in the late 80’s and recently got it on used vinyl. But I very rarely play it.

I much prefer the KBFO tape from 1978, the Live at the Marquee album, and of course Brussels.

I’ve got tons of Stones - live and studio in pretty much any format you want - and for me Ya Ya’s is towards the bottom of the list.

same for me – the only thing I have to add is that I think the quality of the recording is rather bad (the songs on the bonus D of the deluxe edition sound much better)

"Forever Changes" by Love. I listened to it three times and just could not figure out what people hear in it.
Please try and stick with this album I thought it was crap to begin with but it is a classic.

It has mariachi horns and some weird lyrics ("snot caked upon my pants"). I can see why some don't get "Forever Changes," it is a little unusual even compared to other Love songs. I prefer their greatest hits collections.

Boys & Girls - Bryan Ferry
Closer - Joy Division
Layla - Derek & The Dominoes, (but Blind Faith was a promising band).

closer isn't an album...it's a mood, a bad mood.

but it's a great album.

All agreed. Not bad, but somewhat overrated because of the mythical status of the 1969 US Tour, Altamont etc. It could have been better.

Wings - Band on the Run. Yeah, it's better than Wild Life and Red Rose Speedway. But it's enduring appeal is mystifying, particularly the title track and Jet. Let Me Roll It is the best thing on it.

Anything by ABBA. Never understood why they were so popular.

Same with Nirvana. I find most of their music forgettable at best.So many better bands and music from Seattle and that era IMHO.

Technique by New Order. Their signature sound making, combining a human factor with technologies, culminated with Low-life and Brotherhood. They’ve gone too “techie” on this one, arguably their masterpiece, which has resulted in a number of tracks here sounding over-mechanical to my ears.

Songs Of Faith And Devotion by Depeche Mode. Not a bad album in itself, but going bluesy started to spoil their music with this one IMHO. All of their subsequent releases, Ultra onwards, do very little to me. For me, their last great album is Violator. DM still draw a huge crowd around the world — however, sad to say, in terms of creativity they are shadows of the past.

I thought Delta Machine, Sound of the Universe and especially Playing the Angel were great albums.
But their last tour, as the album (besides a song or two), did nothing to me. Although I witnessed some great DM concerts over the years.

I saw DM live four times between 1985 and 1990, their best times by agreement of many of the group’s aficionados. Then I caught them in 2013 for the first time in 23 years. While I enjoyed the show, I discovered, to my dismay, that there was a drummer, and — shock, horror — he was kicking double bass drums hard and loud! That was the last thing I expected to see at a DM show. I saw them again last year. Although the bass drum was reduced to a single unit, the overall impression was no different — everything sounded in loud hammering. Going towards a rock direction does harm much of their charm IMHO.

Couldn't think of anything to add to this thread until I saw this.
Generally speaking I can't stand him either, but there's a couple old tunes that are OK when I hear them on the radio.

This seems to have happened to 80s bands like U2 and Tears For Fears too. It`s bad for them, really.

In my view, U2 have always been a rock band, more or less. However, with Joshua Tree, they succeeded in expanding their musicality into a big rock sound that appealed to a wider audience while retaining their post-punk ethos, which I admire a lot. The problem began when they took themselves too seriously — Rattle And Hum, their next album and an effort of digging deeper into blues and American roots music, resulted in a mishmash of misguided inquiring spirit and passion. Perhaps it is my least favorite U2 album.

I know I have to keep my tongue straight now, `cause I may say Surrealistic Pillow when I mean After Bathing At Baxters. However, Surrealistic Pillow is the mellow one, while After Bathing At Baxters is the experimental one. I think both albums are great. What is not great, is young bands of today emulating their sound, ugh!

The Stone Roses’ self-titled debut album.
(What’s The Story) Morning Glory? by Oasis.

Both competent records, and I enjoy them. But in terms of purely musical contents, they are merely above average, nothing more, nothing less. There is nothing innovative in there. Neither of them deserves the iconic status it got IMHO.
The main reason why both groups rose to the huge stardom (in their home country, though not in America, unlike the great predecessors from Britain such as The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Police, The Cure, Depeche Mode etc.) is, I think, that the general public needs a hero, and when there isn’t an appropriate one around, they seek a substitute and put them on the throne if not deliberately. A sad human nature.
