Keith Arthritis?
Posted by: caesar ()

from WIKIPEDIA:
"Richards has spoken in the media about trouble he has had with his fingers. As new media release photos shot in 2005 may very well indicate, Richards may suffer from arthritis.."

How can he still play with those fingers?

=====How can he still play with those fingers?+++++

Probably, with lots of supplements and medicines not available to mere mortals such as us. I have a mild case and it limits my guitar playing. I wonder how pumped up on meds (for valid purposes...) that Keith really is.

Come on, you should check out my mum's fingers. They're scary as hell, but she doesn't have trouble with them. You can't tell from a photo if someone has arthritis, unless it's in a real bad form, and then he wouldn't be playing anymore. Saying he had trouble with his fingers could mean anything. He may just have an occansional cramp in them. Keith drinks allot during interviews. 95% of what he's saying is total crap. Don't take it too seriously.

True, Keith is drunk for 95% of his interviews. But I'm sure that liqour helps keep some of the pain away...

I have no idea how bad his condition is, but to say he has it is evident. I only wish I had his resources at fighting it.

Check out these photo's:

I don't really notice anything odd about those fingers? He's a skinny old geezer who's been a drug addict for 20 years, probably holds the world alchohol-drinking record, is a chainsmoker, and has been using his fingers very intensively for about 50 years. Keeping that in mind, his fingers look pretty good to me. If you want manicures go to Mick.

Yeah, sure Reptile.
Of course they manipulate the pix so that we shall pity him! :-O
But take a closer look at your upper pic; his right, playing-hand.
At the same pic its obvious that his indicating finger and
the @#$%& off-finger has some extra flesh.
At your lower pic is can also be seen at his left hand,
same fingers.

The swollening gets worse in the mornings.
Some pics from off-stage may be shot at a early time of the day.
And you know Keiths state at those times.

And maybe his rock´n´roll guts shrinks these fingers while
bein there, up-stage smiling smiley.

Anyway, this is an oooooooooooooooold issue.
And actually there are some real docotrs on board.
My grandpa suffered from severe arthritis and overmedicated
constantly. He couldnt moce towards the end; but that was spinal
arthritis.
Maverick would gladly start a teeth-thread, hope he doesnt see this.

If he did have it, why wouldn't he just say so? It's a pretty big deal for a guy that playes the guitar for a living.

Okay... I take back my comments. After searching a little more, I do indeed agree with you. You were right.

Alchohol makes it worse, ofcourse...

Has he ever officially confirmed it? Elton John once said:

"Keith Richards is a 'monkey with arthritis.'"

I also found this on a website about arthritis:

"Similarly, the last issue of Rolling Stone featured an arthritic Keith Richards, the guitarist from The Rolling Stones. Richards' arthritis is likewise centered where he performs--in his fingers. But the band plays on."

Les Paul also had arthritis... the guy, not his signature-model guitar ofcourse.

Do you think it will limit his performing abilities badly on short term? Les Paul also had arthritis...

Reptile, I appreceate your rowing back on your comments. salute.

will limit his performing abilities badly on short term?

Who knows?
- only Keith could tell if, and how it bothers him.
I don't believe any doctor could stand in Keith's shoes and predict anything like: in about 12 months he won't be able to....blablabla

keep it up, pal.

Well, since Keith had them all crowned in the 70's, there's no need. It was do it then, or Smack would have completely rotted them out of his head.

I have an own theory. Its temptin to think smack killed his teeth...
But look at the Sullivan show from 69! They had rottened already back then;
as our good rock´n´roll friend of Keith´s Mr. Tingvall once said on Keith
during the latters visit in Sweden in 1970 with the Stones: "He looked
like a burnt-down church-yard in his jaw" (freely translated).
Couldnt be smack. I just think he doesnt (didnt) like dentists.
Some stuff & hard boozin already in years esp. 1965-66-67-68-69-70
combined w/ bad sleep & bad food may have caused this.
Then, eventually, for sure the last remaining teeths should have rottened
along the H-period in the 70s.../Dr Baboon.

"or Smack would have completely rotted them out of his head"

the alcohol is the biggest teeth-killing stuff there is.....it breaks down all the B-vitamines, wich are needed for good and healthy teeth.

bye there!

Actually, the way that one occurred was due to a rather amusing (and somewhat tasteless on Keith's part) bit of bantering that went on between Elton and Keith. Keith started it by saying, after Elton performed "Candle in the Wind" at Princess Diana's funeral, that "Elton specializes in writing songs for dead blondes". Elton's reply to that comment was "Keith looks like a monkey with arthritis"...which I thought was a pretty good comeback on Elton's part (even though I'm not an Elton fan).

But I'm on Keiths side here. Elton is pathetic and his counter attack is just mean.

Re: Keith Arthritis?

The problem is Keith DOES have arthritis and it is sure one of the reasons why he isn't creatively "there" on A BIGGER BANG. I read in "Guitar world" he wrote only three songs (of 16) and he didn't play his guitar for MONTHS after the last tour.

I pity him. I pity the Rolling Stones.

hm: what it says in my copy of Guitar World sounds like three are all Keith's,
several all Mick's and the rest collaborations.

my guitar world - the interesting comments from keith were on jaggers approach
and his singing style on ABB.The guitar licks not really talked about and we
got no guitar tabs from ABB. I think the last song that got tabbed by a
rock magazine was start me up and thats why you always see the 15 greatest
riffs always tabbed out and discussed when keith gives these interviews.

I could be wrong but just an educated guess
