O.T. Gilbert O'sullivan, why is he forgotten ?

One of the true genious of music (Songwriter, Singer, Musician). In comparaison, McCartney or Elton are just waste of time. "Himself" or "Back to front" are two masterpieces of the seventies. And he goes on till today with so much great albums. Why wait for him to leave us to begin talkin' about him. I do love him.

Yeah, "Alone Again Naturally" always tops "Gimme Shelter".

He probably lost a lot of his fan base with nonsense like this.

I may be old fashioned
So what if I am
I'm not any different
To any other man
I'm not one of those
Who look for blood from a stone
But I believe
A woman's place is in the home.

Now I'm not one to kid you
You know it's not my style
I wouldn't want to hurt you
Not even for a while
I'm all for a woman
Who can make it on her own
But I believe
A woman's place is in the home.
Ooh baby I believe, I do
A woman's place is in the home.

Wonder what would have happened
Had a woman flattened
Rocky Marciano's nose
Would there have been
A change of views
Would women no longer be used
The way they seem
To think they're being

I know what you're thinking
And you've every right to moan
But I believe, yes indeed, I do,
A woman's place is in the home.
Ooh baby I believe, I do
A woman's place is in the home

To me he was definetely 70s sounding, just like a counter reaction to what had been going on before, a thing I didn`t like. However, that`s not a water proof explanation. I like Roxy Music, and you could say the same about them. That said, has Gilbert O` been as good as Elton John, considering his whole production?

Yeah. This competes with this album track by Paul Revere and the Raiders:

"Alone Again Naturally" is memorable, but Gilbert O'Sullivan is pretty much a one-hit wonder for a reason, diehard fans excepted. However, Paul Revere and The Raiders' rewrite of "Alley Oop" isn't the equivalent of saying women belong in the home. "Leslie can" is a deliberately cheeky song written about a real-life housekeeper they employed (who was a much older matronly woman) with lyrics that are meant to sound suggestive in an innocent sixties way ("Makes me feel so good I start to get up"). Harmless fluff similar to Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs.

I kinda liked several of his songs, when I was a kid (my father played G a lot at home) - still like ‘em, as a matter of fact.

Not to be confused with the even older theatrical partnership of Gilbert and Sullivan ...
The Pirates of Penzance, others

Don't know any of his other tunes, but Alone Again was a HUGE hit (I remember even my mom liked it), and based on that alone he has his place...somewhere...

The epitome -- or "e(motional) pity me"? -- of the "weepy seventies".

If you've ever collected or even listened to a batch of hits from the first half of that decade, then you won't forget him.

I hear ya...

Still, even while hidding myself behind the childhood years I was in when I first listened to his stuff, I honestly think tracks (apart from the ones already mentioned) like Nothing Rhymed and (yes; éven) Matrimony are actually really great songs - and to me, that will never change.

He's a good singer. He's had 6 #1 songs world wide, most people might not know.

Yes, 'Clair' came out in late '72 and was one of the first singles I ever bought (age 7)...I always associate that song with happy times with my family during the holidays that year.

Get Down (1973) was a great AM-radio single. Very McCartney-like. Great record.

Three hit wonder and probably his best, at least melody-wise - Nothing Rhymed.

Get Down and Alone Again Naturally is all I remember from that time.

Never knew about "A woman's place is in the home". That's too embarrassing.

But please explain the part of the "true genious" and classifying Paul McCartney's and Elton John's oeuvre as "waste".
