Review: The Rolling Stones at Old Trafford

Dianne Bourne sees the legendary rockers make their first visit to the city in fifteen years - and it was worth the wait

Bolting on to the stage with the canter of a sprightly young colt, Mick Jagger took his place inside Manchester’s Theatre of Dreams to open an unforgettable night for Rolling Stones fans.

With some 50,000 filling Old Trafford stadium under blue skies, there was already a festival atmosphere as fans waited in the sunshine for the legendary rock n rollers to take to the stage.

And from the opening strains of Jumpin’ Jack Flash, with 74-year-old Mick prancing like a catwalk model down the promenade stage into the crowds, right through to the rocking encore of (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction, the energy is fizzing and quite phenomenal.

Mick, of course, is the consummate showman, remaining snake of hips and utterly fabulous with every curl of the lip and shake of the mane.

Guitar legend Keith Richards remains the rock pirate, Ronnie Wood dubbed the ‘Ryan Giggs’ of the band by Jagger for his youthful vigour, we presume, and Charlie Watts the driving pounding force on the drums.

Hit after hit rolls out from the band’s impressive six-decade career, with highlights including Brown Sugar, You Can’t Always Get What You Want and Let’s Spend the Night Together (chosen by fans via a Twitter poll).

It has been 15 years since their last visit to Manchester so it has been a welcome return on this gargantuan No Filter tour.

Mick says: “It’s great to be back in Manchester. We used to come here in the early 60s and we played the Odeon over and over but I don’t think it’s there anymore, I think it’s now a parking lot.

“We also played in the Free Trade Hall which happens to be where the band are all staying now. But we won’t be playing there anymore because it’s all hotel rooms!”

Jagger certainly brings the banter - he makes sure there’s a shout-out for as many northern towns and cities he can think of - Stockport, Wigan, Liverpool ‘oh and I think I forgot Bolton’, he laughs.

And then there’s the jokes about Northern Rail and spotting Corrie baddie Pat Phelan on The Curry Mile...

There are few rock stars or wannabes that have followed in the footsteps of Mick and Co that have not cited th as an influence.

Manchester’s own Liam Gallagher hailed them the greatest rock n roll band of all time, ahead of supporting the band at their London Stadium gig last month. Here in Manchester that honour went to Verve frontman Richard Ashcroft who yelled his own tribute saying: “Rolling Stones forever”.

But, given his band’s row with the Stones’ former manager Allan Klein, over royalties, he couldn’t resist a dig when launching into Bittersweet Symphony on the night.

Keith Richards said ahead of this gig: “There’s no stopping us. We’re only just getting started really.”

Just don’t leave it another 15 years until you come back lads.

At last! I have to say I feel cheated though. My three shows have been and gone with GS a major disappointment in each.

At last! I have to say I feel cheated though. My three shows have been and gone with GS a major disappointment in each.

My daughter will feel cheated as her one show has been and gone. Being a 13 year old girl (and a great singer herself) you can see why she would look up to someone like Sasha.

Me, on the other hand, I have one show left.

It was kinda funny, the guys who got the drumsticks unfolded s large colorful sign after the bow that I believe read Changr up the setlist, they yelled and got Charlie’s attention on his way off and I see and hear him say “talk to Mick”.. then he went and grabbed the drumsticks and came back and gave them to the sign holders..

Really impressive..
I wasn’t really familiar with him to be honest and was extremely impressed.
Now looking forward to catching him in Edinburgh a second time!
