I don't think they were ever "done"...they released a new album a few years ago and continue to tour (though not at the moment). Maybe not as popular as they once were, but the same could be said for a majority of bands from every era.
Never knew. DEVO adapted the song very well, that's even greater homage to the Stones. Very interesting how the music works by a differe3nt band and genre. Shakespearean.
Quote Hairball . . . the concept that instead of evolving, society was in fact regressing (“de-evolving”) as humans embraced their baser instincts. . . .
great article.
music aside, the guy was a visionary, no, 40 or whatever years on?
Devo has had a lot more than "20 minutes". "Whip It", recorded a few years later was their commercial peak, but they have put out several albums of excellent material and have continued to perform.
I've seen them twice in the last five years, an outdoor gig at Chateau St. Michelle vineyards in Woodinville, Washington, where they completely blew Debra Harry and Blondie off the stage and at the Neptune Theater in Seattle, where they played their earliest material soon after the death of Bob 2.
I still remember being 14 and seeing them perform "Satisfaction" on Saturday Night Live. We wore out the "Q: Are We Not Men, A: We Are Devo" album. Loved it then and love it now.
Mark Mothersbaugh just scored the soundtrack to Thor Ragnarok, and it sounds awesome from what I've heard. He's having a very successful career as a composer.
Meant ta mention this 2 CD set the other day ....plus I had ta find the friggin' thang ... 4 track demos including a pumpin' version of Satizzzzzzfaction ...
saw Devo in the early 80s at the Palladium. Not a fan, but went because a couple of friends wanted to. They were terrible. Did not speak once during the show; there big song at the time was "Beautiful World", which actually wasn't bad. As I recall they played the MTV video behind them while they sang it; they were big on playing videos during the concert! The only other thing I remember was that I just kept waiting for them to play Satisfaction, even though I hated the version, at least it'd pass for something I liked!
and they never played it!
