GREAT AMERICAN BANDS WITH NEW SONGS: The Red Hot Chili Peppers... nobody's in their league for new stuff

CLASSIC BANDS WITH GREAT LIVE CONCERTS: Motley Crue, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, John Fogerty, Creedence Clearwater Revisited, the Dead in all their versions still awesome, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac

I just can't give it to Bob Dylan just now. His last tour you just can't hear one word this guy is singing, and he really plays less than 50% classics, way less...

I play Dylan CD's all the time but honestly wouldn't pay much to see him if he was across the street. I don't think the Allmans have been the same since Betts left.

"Neil's Canadian, regardless of where he lives. Don't be silly. "
(Camper88)

Yep, And old Zimmey´s a German Jew with Swedish ancestors. Jim Morrison´s Irish.
Jagger´s ´alf-Aussie. McCartney & Lennon are both semi-Irish. And thank you Jamaica for Phil Lynott. Springsteen? German-Italian. Or?

Irish-Italian with some Dutch (hence the surname) if you please!

And Jim Morrison was Ulster-Scots (Scotch-Irish to Americans). We're claiming him as one of ours. With his ability to drink and self destruct, he couldnt have been anything else!

Dylan's ancestry is in fact Russian Jewish (from Odessa, on his fathers side) and Lithuanian Jewish (on his mum's) , by the way!

and his mother's maiden name is a word dear to our hearts - Stone

considering the two guys who the band are named after happen to be as English as fish and chips, I think calling them "American" is stretching credibility a bit, Greg...

I don't get the idea of saying Neil Young in the same breath as Bob Dylan. Neil can't hold a candle to Dylan. Neil Young would come in fourth in CS&N comparison. Bobby Rydell is better than Neil Young. Even the Monkeys were better.

And "ceiling wax", no matter what you read or where you read it,even on printed, released Stones lyrics, it's "sealing wax", like on the back of a letter with a seal imprint. What the heck is "ceiling wax"?

Gazza,

I was thinking more about Young's roots, the culture in which he grew up, the relationships that he still has with Canadian artists, and the way he talks about Canadian cluture and his place in it.

He's not American.

If you don't believe me, ask INS, or ask Neil, here's what he said, if his words hold any weight:

Neil Young: "My heart is still in Canada, but I don't have to physically be here to be a Canadian."

Sorry for twisting the thread: another example of American music today? Wilco.

Sorry Gazza, I mistook your quoting Baboon Bro as your own rebuttal. My mistake.

I think I'd have to go with Springsteen and Dylan. Young is out because of him being Canadian, plus I'm biased and don't like his music.

It's a pretty good bet you never attended an NY show, and also a real good bet you've never listened to "Weld" or "Live Rust", two of the greatest live CD's you'll ever hear....

That said, I really can't count Neil as American given he's Canadian.

NOW, if you said "North American music", then he's in solid

Interesting point, Tod... they are very similar music, you could throw Fogerty in there also. Like one, you're likely to be a fan of all of them....

Maybe he's just not listened to Neil's best stuff... Weld and Live Rust are his 2 best CD IMO... Greendale is pretty much a disaster.

truth be told - it took me many years to really warm up to Neil - but once I did and got over the borrowing-from-Bob problem, I really got into him big-time. I soured briefly on him last year after reading his bio - he's really strange...but I've recovered.

Did not mean to stir the pot....so comments on other posts:

OK, my reference to Americans not knowing that BC is not in South America is based on a true incident I had in NY state while folks were wondering about my licence plate and how cool it was I drove all the way from South America. A recent comic used the line that Canada is a major player in the world stage as we are the first country the US will call when declaring war...so we can point it out on a map. Kiding aside and with the recognition things are changing down south it was a long time observation of the US that their media coverage was so national and national history covered so well in school that world events were not taught or seen on TV 'to the extent other countries did'. I have in all fairness noted a great increase in the awarness of Americans to world issues and I credit CNN for that. DGA35 had some good points. I also once drove a Russian made car into the US, talk about drawing stares (just never saw one). If a gas jockey asked about the car and he looked cool (Big Sur comes to mind) I gave him the tour, if the guy looked like his name was Bubba I said it was forien and tried to leave fast. What surprized me was when you opened the hood there was some large part with Chez Republic or something on it and everyone who saw it said "OH. it's Europian", which was fine with me given the political climate of the day.

As for Neil.....home is were the heart is....if you keep your citezenship that's were the heart is. Mr Carrie you can have (recently switched). Question....do recording companies give breaks to Canadians or do Canadians seek out a richer market. Chicken or the egg kind of thing. The Stones exploit the US market, so do Canucks. I would think a US label would sign anybody they think would make them cash, no big break involved if you are talented.

No I did not miss Pammela, I thought about her since she is from my local, but the minute I did the blood flow to my brain altered and I missed including her. Adam Sandler is from Alberta (surprized me too) and Mr. Keneir is Canadian although I know not were from. The Tilly sisters are also from my area as is Kim Catrell, dam there goes the brain again. You did have to mention Tom Green, I had hoped not to embarass Canada. Let's not forget Captain Kirk and Scotty, live long and prosper my freinds.

I'd put a vote in the tin for the Blind Boys of Alabama.

They have been recording and touring as a gospel group since the mid 1930's. Much longer than Dylan, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis. Even longer than Ralph Stanley.

The last few CD's are some of the best in their vast catalog. They cut songs by Tom Waits, Ben Harper, and the Stones ('Just Want to See His Face') -- among other blues and gospel classics. Fans of badass pedal steel should check out their last CD, since Robert Randolph is on most of the tracks.

All American music is influenced by the well these guys are mining. I'm sure Keef would agree...

From IMDB.com
Adam Sandler was born on the 9th September 1966 in Brooklyn, New York

No losss, besides, he's a Guns & Roses fan (translation: does a wicked impersonation of Axel Rose).

Yo Ross... well I saw them at Chicago Theatre gig about a year ago or so... first of all they don't play alot of "Betts" songs, so that's a downer... I mean they're very technically competent, a great band...

For my tastes just not quite at same level as the others I listed, that's all. Great band, no question.

That's cool.

It is weird seeing someone else play 'Liz Reed, I've seen just about all incarnations and (to these ears) the Derek Trucks/Warren Haynes combo is the best since the Duane/Dickey prime.

XM did a cool thing where they had the current lineup play Eat A Peach in it's entirety live in the studio. It wasn't note-for-note...and it was flawless. Greg sang Blue Sky. Just before they launched into it he says " I never thought I would see the day that I would be singing THIS tune", then he nails it!

Great moment!

Ross
