You're at a party.....
Posted by: skelly ()

...you've had a few beers, and somebody produces a guitar. Full of the brave juice and wanting to get the party going you grab the guitar and scream "I'll give you a song", so what do you play?

It happened to me a couple of weeks ago, about 3am after being at a wedding all day and seriously under the influence, so I played

1) Squeeze box
2) Honky Tonk Women
3) Dead Flowers
4) Ballad of John & Yoko

Nothing too technical and all easy to play when you're drunk.

I think I've bust a button on my trousers....

I've always wanted to play the lead on "I Don't Know Why".

Wasn't looking too good, but I was feeling real well.

...and you don't know why?

I should prepare myself for that situation, really.
It has to be a song in standard tuning, because not too many people have a guitar in G-Tuning laying around and when I am drunk I don't want to tune it to G - would be a mess. So I usually just fool around with some country and blues tunes (Love Hurts!) if it's an acoustic - I sing like an angel, but only to my ears grinning smiley

Done this a few times.

I love playing Tumbling Dice, IORR, and YCAGWYW.
They're great for setting a groove, getting everyone singing along, and trading off verses and licks. And everybody knows 'em.
I also like playing deep-blues riff versions of Let It Bleed and Miss You. Miss You makes for a great blues tune and it shakes everybody up when they hear the blues bones of the song.

I had a cousin, a Stones fan and a junkie, who got up on stage to sing at his brother's wedding. He sang "Dead Flowers" and the Beatles "This Boy". God, that was peculiar. But one of the best performances I've ever witnessed.

I was at a party not too long ago and when the guitars came out late night, everyone did a singalong of "The Weight."

Really emotional--uplifting, but with a bunch of meloncholy. With all due respect to the Stones, I can't think of a better song or a better recording.

I would give the guitar to someone who could play and start singing TNT by AC/DC or something by the Stones. I don't know what. Maybe No Expectations. lol

I'm supposed to be playing at my friend's wedding next weekend. Not the thing you're talking about here but anyway... I'll be damned if I don't get to throw in Brown Sugar, Start Me Up or the like... I hope the boys in the band know these tunes.

You know what I hate, when I'm at a wedding and a Rolling Stones song comes on, and since everyone knows that I love them so much, they immediately start starting at me like I'm gonna jump on the floor doing a Mick Jagger impersonation, then I don't even want to dance. It really takes the fun out of it.

I like the TNT and Ramones suggestions.

If you want a good party, start with The Boatmans Call with Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds...then Ramones

I have always wanted to sing "Me and Bobby McGee" in its entirety to any gathering that would listen..but I gues I have never been under the influence that much:
"Busted flat in Baton Rouge
Waitin' fer a train,
I was feeling just as faded as my jeans..
Bobby flagged a diesel down, just before it rained"
Well, you know the rest
By the time the "na na na na na na NA nana" comes around ..everyone needs to be drunk!

Okay, when you listen to the boatmans call, you get really sad, then you play Ramones and you suddenly are up in the sky.
If you don`t have any Nick Cave-cd, buy Murder Ballads, it`s increible good. BUY IT!

Country Honk
I'll Be There For You (I know. Kill me)
Clap Hands
Let It Bleed
Please Please Me
A Hard Days Night
Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
Love Is Strong
Sweethearts Together

Spent the holidays with lots of friends in Italy and also lots of musicians whom I met and we had huge sessions everynight. Being at once the only singer and the worst guitarist, all the pros had to adapt to me - since I can only play what I know beforehand but they can play on anything. Pays off to be bad!

So there was these percussionists and a pro harmonica player (chromatic) and we had such fun on Miss You and Sympathy, but also on lots of old reggae tunes.

AND - this was just so great - there were these three chicks who sing traditional pugliese music in trio, fab voices and great mastery of harmonies. So I had backing vocals on Tumbling Dice, YCAGWYW, Honky tonk women, Hit the road Jack, Message to you Rudy etc.

SOooo cool! This is one thing I had never experienced, to have this great layer of vocals and be able to interract as you want, totally confident in the fact that the song is rolling. Loved it.

I'll give you a song! With all the talent I could muster (which ain't much) I'd hit them with the best, most rockin' version of Ice Ice Baby I could muster. Followed of course by Achy Breaky Heart. And for those hold outs I'd finish with Dancing On The Ceiling.
