Agree! Stripped is a great album.

Four Flicks is great 2 reviewed as an album, live licks sucks with the editing and overdubs...

Stripped is great in my eyes and ears..... those shows must have been awesome, amazing set lists and those rarely/never played songs dragged out from the past, Shine A Light, Dead Flowers, Sweet Virginia, Rip This Joint, All Down The Line, Connection.....

Imagine such a show now where they pulled out Sway, Dear Doctor, Jigsaw Puzzle, ventilator Blues etc....

Ya-ya's is obviously the best. Overdubs or not; doesn't matter. Masterpiece from opening seconds to the final crowdroar of SFM
Got Live is so cool. Everybody ALWAYS only mentions Fortune Teller and I've been loving you-this was the 60's. Things were done differently. They were still discovering and experiementing with the whole genre. And one thing - James Brown had released the hugely successful "Live @ Apollo". Done that same way with overdubbed crowd noise. But on GLIYWI there is the last two cuts of Mother Baby and Satisfaction that rock hard! Under my Thumb is my fave version ever. The Last Time, Cloud and Breakdown are straight live. "Im Allright and Not Fade Away - this is a killer live album!
Love you Live - that 3rd side would redeem 3 sides of utter garbage. But the rest happens to be pretty dman good. Side 2 has Tumbvling Dice and Fingerprint that are a little weak. You Gotta Move must have been more of a photo opp than a good cut. YCAGWYW is out of this world though with Ronnie's solo.
Side 1 is strong except for the opener HTW. Side 4 is surprisingly good too.
Stripped is IMO the best album sonce the 89 return. Not a single weak song on there. Often overlooked it's a masterpiece.
Same with No Security. Alwasy we hear about Dave Matthews; as much as I hate him, he is not that bad on MM. Tge low point of the album to me is that Muzak Sax player on WOAF.
Leaves the two head scratchers Flashpoint and Still Life. The second one is better than Flashpoint. That is one terrible album. The warhorses are the only reason to get this one. Still Life has exactly those cuts that someone else mentioned: the guitars on Imagination, Night Together, Time and Thumb.
Licks ...I'm sorry, I don;t count that one. Go for the boots.

Got live if you want it * (muddy tapes of kids screaming with ridiculous overdubbing)
Ya Yas ***** (unsurpassable)
LYL ** (the El Mocambo songs are ****)
Still Life ***
Flashpoint **1/2
Stripped ***1/2
No security ***1/2
Live Licks ** (musically its ***1/2 but its the most pointless album the Stones ever released and a record they obviously cared so little about that they cant have listened to it before approving its release)

I'll add also the "Got live if you want it" EP from 1965, which despite the sound quality is a little gem of a record. ****

Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out ***** The Stones at their best! Great album!
Got Live If You Want It **** Love the rawness but could do without the overdubs of the audience.
Love You Live **** Good solid album. Witty banter during the band intros. Funny!
Stripped ***1/2 Good but not great. Song selection should've been better.
Still Life ***1/2 A little sloppy. Loved Let Me Go on this!
No Security ***1/2 Decent but could've done without Dave Matthews on Memory Motel.
Flashpoint *** A rockin' version of SFTD here but 2 studio tracks on a live album? WTF???
Live Licks **1/2 What happened here? Kind of bland IMO.

I wsn't sure also if we were going to rate the Got Live EP. Agree with Gzza that the Live Lix is the most "pointless" release ever. That is a good term. But Gazza I disagree totally aboutyour assessment of Got Live album. Again, I think one must look at it in light of the times it was released in.

There are two versions of got live...a UK and USA version with different songs

other remark: Fingerprint File was not recorded live in Paris but during the Toronto rejearsals '77, great version BTW

Re: live album ratings

Fingerprint File from LYL is from Toronto 1975, not 1977. Despite what the sleeve says, only 9 of the songs on sides 1,2 & 4 are from Paris. The rest are from LA & Toronto '75 and London '76.

The two "got live if you want its" are entirely different recordings that share the same title....one is a live EP from spring 1965, the other a live album from autumn 1966.

Chelsea - listen to the two "got live" releases and compare. the first one is raw in your face rock n roll. That version of "Route 66" on it is like an incendiary.

The second one even has two songs on it that are entirely studio recordings (one of them was never even performed live!) overdubbed with screams.

the EP is indeed a great document of the era it was recorded. The LP is a cut and paste job and not a particularly good one.

Don't agree with you Gazza, I have the Paris shows on DVD and they used recordings from the seperate shows but they are the Paris ones, they are recognizable.

FF is not live; as far as I know they didn't play it at all in '76 and a year earlier they played a totally different version.
On love you live you can easily hear the audience dubbed in.

But I might be wrong, convince me >>

Sorry but youre wrong. Its quite easily verified and has been numerous times by people who have researched it thoroughly. Some of the material from the Paris Tv special matches the live album, but most dont.

I didnt say FF was played in 1976, I said its from 1975. The version on LYL has been edited in about 2 or 3 places from the original...

And if you listen to IORR on LYL, Mick clearly says "Toronto" to the crowd - its from the 17.6.75 show there, same source as Fingerprint File

Question, has the UK "Got Live" EP ever been available on CD legitimately?

yeah it was issued on the first of the recently issued CD singles boxed set (1963-1965)

a couple of the songs have also been issued on the US versions of the early studio albums (ie Decembers Children)

Gazza, I know which Got Live is which. I just think the album is really good. The EP is outstanding, no doubt. But when you criticize the LP for those two cuts, that still leaves ten livecuts. Many of them redhot. I just don't understand (like I said in earl;ier post) why everyone jumps on those two tracks. That is all anyone evre mentions. Nevber do I hear how hot the rest is. And those two tracks: so what, really. They did what they did. Does it really sound bad? No, of course not. So why the criticism? I almost feel that people criticize them just because they fell they are supposed to. But it actually sound spretty @#$%& good the way IBLYTL swells with the screams.
I wonder if I came with enough conviction and said "Well the EP is substandard because My God! they had the nerve to take writing credits for an audience chant." When that was actually a funny thing, a cool gutsy move.
You feel me?

I was actually addressing shedooby in my post about the 2 different releases. Sorry for the confusion

As for great Live albums... no band has ever had better live recordings than the Stones... even their "mediocre" Live albums are truly masterpieces...

BUT... my "go to" Stones album now, and for the past few years is Stripped... just awesome, worth it for Sweet Virginia alone...

Their Very Best Two: Get Yer Ya Yas and Stripped...

Also interesting: Flashpoint & Love You Live...

That's 4 great Live Albums, their 4 best I think.

What is the "must have" live album from the 72-73 period. I just watched the Stones segment on the "Dick Cavett Show" DVD set, and the 2 minutes or so of Brown Sugar as amazing. You can hear Nicky Hopkins, and how much better he sounds than Chuck (sorry)

matter of opinion, I guess...I think Dylan's released more great live albums than anyone..the Bootleg Series ones alone have all been superb

The Stones IMO have released just one truly great live album. Ya Ya's. The rest have flattered to deceive and werent as good as they could or should have been.

Neil Young, Bruce, Johnny Cash, The Band, Lou Reed have all put out a couple of gems apiece

Dylan's 66 bootleg at Royal Albert Hall and the "Real Live" with Mick Taylor are phenomenal...

Neil Young's Weld and Live Rust are tree-&^%$-mendous...

Don't forget Clapton and the Dominoes on Derek & Dominoes Live, truly his very best album...

Creedence Clearwater "Recollection" just ROCKs...

But I wouldn't say any of them are better than the Stones best live.

Real Live is an example of a Dylan live album that doesnt adequately document the tour it came from.

I was at the two of the three shows used for that record and even based on the tapes of the shows (aside fom my own personal memories) the performances were far better than what they chose to release.

Who Cares ? It's a 100% brilliant album.

As for great non-Stone live albums, you just can't beat two MASTERPIECES from John Coltrane:

Coltrane Live at the Village Vanguard Nov. 1961

AND

Coltrane Live at Birdland

Two of the very greatest jazz albums ever recorded, and sure to appeal to 99% of all die-hard Stones fanatics.

OK, thanks gazza, Honestly I was last updated on this particular topic by a Dutch fanclub in 1978 and never dived into it again after...
Still I wonder what they did with the FF recording, so much editing, it must be easier to record it again >>
