It's good to hear covers of their later songs. This is very nice.

That's very pretty NICOS, really shows what a lovely song they wrote. But I still think the original is better. Listening to this version, it strikes me again that this is one of Mick's more personal songs, facing his fear of aging and being replaced by someone younger.

Great cover and I think thats one of the best Stones songs since 1981. It was a rare really well written song from that time. It all fit.

I'm one of the few who love New Faces. It's a beautiful song and very very underrated. That cover version is also pretty good.

I like KISS' version of 2000 Man better than the original version:

It's not that New Faces is bad, it's just that the lyrics are pretty corny. It's better suited for a female singer. I agree, that's a pretty good cover.

As for KISS cover of 2000 Man, could be. It's a very good cover, but I like the Stones version too.

Soundgarden, Stray Cat Blues ... one of my favorite Stones covers, although the Stones version is so blistering good, I still wouldn't rate this as better than the Stones

Soundgarden´s version is awful... everything I like about the original is gone here.

The cover of New Faces is quite nice, but the original is much better. And I dont even like the original very much. Not because of the song itself, its Mick who is over-acting as always on ballads since the 80s. He always sounds like a ridiculous MJ-impersonator who is trying too hard - Where´s the producer who stops that???

I´ve heard some Stones-cover-versions over the years, some good, some bad, some indeed impressive, but NONE tops the original.

I always thought New Faces was a great later day treat. It's got a story, it's catchy, and the bridge in the song has great harmonies. Clearly not a throwaway song at all.

Definitely not better than the original, nothing can be.
But it's a kick ass version in it's own right. I loved it in 1971 when I bought the album. Live Johnny Winter And.

OK, I'm a Stones fanatic so it should come as no surprise that I find zero versions of Stones songs by others to be much good. Some are OK to me but I'll prefer the actual Stones anytime. About 100 years ago I kind of like Grand Funks's version of Gimme Shelter but not now...

Not better, but I've always liked this freak show version of Paint it Black - it deserves some points for it's bombastic extravagance:

Karel Gott - Paint it Black

Satisfaction - Otis Redding
Satisfaction - Devo

These are the only two covers I can think of that are even decent, but neither tops the original. The Stones are the hands down all time greatest cover band of all time. The Grateful Dead are the hands down worse cover band of all time. (Among major rock groups).

Stones songs require the Stones. The idiosyncratic chemistry has to be there. That's why Bill's departure was like pulling a leg off a chair.

Wait, Johnny Winter's Silver Train might be better.

How about what I thought this thread originally meant, covers BY the Stones that are better than the originals? I don't know which I'd choose (definitely not anything originally sung by Smokey Robinson), but It's All Over Now is in the running.

Let's Spend The Night Together, done by Muddy Waters.
It's an entirely new song really, but it's better than the original, I think.

I like Eric Burdon's version of Paint It, Black with War. It gets very weird with the odd rapping.

Hahaha - yes, I also prefer Eric Burdons version above Karel Gott's, but once you hear Karel letting it rip it's hard to erase from your mind (hence the freak show description). smiling smiley
With that said, there's no version that's better than the Stones imo.

Hard to find a better version of the original when it comes to Stones songs.
But here are three that I like.
First, Lemmy's version of SFTD : [www.youtube.com]

Then Prince own rendition of HTW : [www.youtube.com]

And there's the La's cover of Jumpin' Jack Flash : [www.youtube.com]
I always thought they nailed it pretty well.

Definitely not better than the original by any stretch but it was pretty cool to see Dylan open shows with Brown Sugar some years back.
