OT--Happy St. Patrick's Day (from NRBQ)
The thread about Bill's replacement brought up Joey Spampinato, which inspired me to pass this along
Since their first album in 1969, the band NRBQ has gained a rabid cult following for their eclectic Rock-with-a-shot-of-Jazz Omni-pop, all the while mostly staying off the musical radar of the general public
One of their undiscovered gems is “St. Patrick’s Day” a song written and sung by founding member and bassist Joey Spampinato for the band’s 1997 You’re Nice People You Are “children’s album.” (Because of the band’s penchant for fun and whimsey in their songs and album artwork, several hardcore fans were initially clueless that this record was specifically intended for kids!)
The genius of “St. Patrick’s Day” is that it begins with deliberate cliches, citing Irish names and vernacular, then makes an unexpected nod to diversity, and then deftly concludes a song about ethnic national pride with a message of universal human brotherhood. The simple brilliance of the songwriting is in the economy of it’s lyrics. Not a word is wasted as it manages to get in all of these ideas in just over two minutes (2:38).
“St. Patrick’s Day” is a classic that belongs on the jukebox of every pub in the country.[
