Spanish Fingers: The "Other" SF Cover

Ah, yes. Nothing like a little Fowler's West India Treacle ("Guaranteed Pure Cane") to sweeten any dish.

Having never actually held a copy of this cover in my own sticky little fingers, I have no idea what's on the back. Anyone have a photo they can post?

Ola Tatters! My copy if I remember rightly has the same photo that was on the insert of the British release. It shows a full frontal shot of band photo with Keith in profile and the others facing the camera. I'll see if I can find a copy to post or at least scan it when I get home.

Yes great wax. I cost me 150 euros at a great record store in Marseille owned by a cool guy named Dino. There are Stones pictures and records everywhere. I NEVER found anything like his store in Paris. Paris, a great place to eat fine food and have good sex, but a bad place for record shopping.....

Way to go Dino! Anyone know the full story behind the Spanish SF cover? Did the Spanish branch of Atlantic Records find the original zipper cover too revolting, so they asked for something else, and, as a giant size FU, the Stones gave them something even stickier to chew on? That would not be too out of character for them, as evidenced by the CS Blues debacle. Or, on the other hand, so to speak, was it the other way around? Was the fingers-in-the-can shocker supposed to be the official cover art for worldwide distribution, and Atlantic in America and elsewhere said "No way, that image is just too downright disturbing," and the Stones therefore gave them, as another giant size FU, Andy's crotch art?

That's what Wyman claimed in his book (although I don't think it was the record company, but rather Spanish censors). Funny that they had no problem with the severed finger, but a zipper was too risque.

and not only was the zipper cover considered too offensive by the Spaniards but so was the song Sister Morphine, which was dropped in favor of the live Leeds Let it Rock....

Guess that's what they call "cultural differences". God forbid you should show a Spaniard something "gay". It's much healthier for his "machismo" if you show him severed body parts from a mutilated woman.

Back in 1971 Spain was under the final years of the Franco dictatorial regime, so the censorship found the original cover a bit too much for the strict (and heavily catholic) morals the regime held. Sister Morphine suffered of censorship, too, so Let It Rock live from Leeds was put instead.

About your comment on showing a spaniard something "gay", I would remind you that Spain is the third country in the world which has legalized the homosexual marriages, so I think your view of Spain is way toooooo much stereotyped... Maybe part of older people here stay somewhat on the "ancient regime morals", but the majority here is way over those morals. As a matter of fact, and talking about morals, I see people in this classic catholic country thinking and living their lives in a far less religiously-morals way than most of anglo-saxon countries.

I hope you are not confusing "hispanic" with "spanish" or "spaniard" or even worse, thinking Spain is a small country located somewhere in the Caribbean Sea where men sit in front of their houses with a guitar in their hands while women go to the market riding donkeys... (with all respect). I hope you don't think men in Spain wear bullfighting clothes and women wear flamenco dresses, clapping their hands while walking on the street, because it should show the absolute lack of knowledge about what Spain is...

Did a semi-effort to find it in cyberspace.
At [www.keno.org] the front cover is to be seen;
but when you try to copy a pop-up-text "naughty naughty" or slt. appears.

...Didnt see it at first; but its the good ol´ Keno site, keno.org.

Well, I think you are protesting a little too much, his post wasn't THAT negative. But I was going to chime in about gay marriage being approved in Spain and them telling the Pope to go screw himself (but you did it for me, except the Pope part, that was me lol). My partner and I would love to come to Spain and get married. Would they let us stay? Cause, you know, we'd come back here and the rednecks would chop our heads off and feed us to Jesus or something.

I got my copy in London in 1985 on a day out to meet Mr Vik. Cost £5, saw a copy in this months Record Collector: £250.

If they try an anniversary series (35th as they missed 2001), they should do something like Bowie: 2CD sets with rarities and perhaps issue SF in the Spanish sleeve.
