Forgot about Anyone Who Had A Heart.

Dusty Springfield recorded her version on January 21, 1964 at Olympic Studios and it's on her debut album A Girl Called Dusty.

I'd always known Cilla Black had a UK hit with Anyone Who Had a Heart, but had never heard it...
Beautiful version. This is an amazing song.

An interesting thing about the Cilla Black version. Both the Dusty and Cilla versions have the same backing session vocalists, the English vocal trio the Breakaways, who were also on some of Petula Clark's biggest hits, including Downtown. Petula Clark also had a version of Anyone Who Had A Heart. They are uncredited on Burt's 1965 single Trains and Boats and Planes.

Great info...
I guess another topic of discussion could be: Dionne, Cilla or Dusty...?
They all recorded versions of the same song.

Thanks for this thread. Such great music. Dusty Springfield made so many great records, music with real soul, stuff that sounds fresh today. All this was part of that great 60's scene the Stones came out of and were a big part of shaping.

Huge fan;
Brilliant songwriter and his partnership with Hal David was immense and hugely influential;
It is possible however (and I am not taking ANYTHING from BB here) that Hal David doesn't get the credit he deserves;
Alongside his fantastic work with BB David also wrote the lyrics to two of my favourite James Bond themes; "We Have All The Time In The World" from OHMSS and "Moonraker"

You're not wrong. Hal - well, his wife - felt his contribution was undervalued. I had hoped to rectify this but it was too late and Hal died a few months after we talked vaguely about plans. Still, they lived a good + rewarding life with homes on both coasts, and they certainly weren't complaining. Hal was also a very important advocate for songwriters through his work at ASCAP.

I remember ABC News did a profile on him maybe a decade-plus ago, specifically how he came up with the lyrics to What the World Needs Now.

Great stuff!!
Thanks for your contribution and any other insight into Hal David would be very welcomed!
I was listening to the theme from Valley of the Dolls earlier and couldnt help wondering how this guy was able to convey heartbreak so beautifully. The words are never trite or overwrought. That is genius.

Two more Bacharach/David songs from Dusty Springfield's 1964 debut album:

Twenty-Four Hours From Tulsa, live performance from her UK ITV series It Must Be Dusty: [www.youtube.com]

And, of course, the well-known Wishin' and Hopin'. But this one features an introductory color clip from 1970 where Burt Bacharach and Dusty discuss how the song came to be recorded, followed by a 1967 TV clip: [www.youtube.com]

I cribbed this from a YouTube description on a clip of Dionne doing a B/D song:

Nick Tosches (writer, music journalist, novelist, biographer and poet), January 7, 1972 issue of the rock magazine FUSION:
"...getting into Dionne Warwick is like finding buried treasure. The Bacharach/David repertoire which milady chooses to sing is so fascinatingly cynical / fatalistic / stoical / emotional / happy, simultaneously! It's pure emotion. There is a whole lot more to emotion than some rock punk bursting his dexedrine-staved blood vessels by screaming "Baby I need you baby" into a microphone. Dionne Warwick is not a rock and roll singer. She's not a jazz singer either. Rhythm and blues? Nope. A pop singer? No way. Did you ever tongue-kiss with someone who barfed a Singapore Sling bolus into your mouth, and then four years later you're with someone else and you feel good and you realize how beautiful it all was and then it's all melancholy/happiness, sort of? That's the kind of singer Dionne Warwick is. She's beautiful. Dionne, paired with Bacharach's string/horn/reed arrangements, comes up as a lyric mezzo-sopranoid par-excellence, melodious/expressiveness-wise. If you've never gotten into her, you ought to. Get hep to Dionne Warwick. For your own sake."

.

Check it out. Drape that scarf over the lamp, turn on that lava lamp and see if the hookah's still functional. Two great takes on Bacharach/David by the late great Isaac Hayes.

And this ain't Bacharach/David, but dig Isaac doing his take on a Glen Campbell by way of Jimmy Webb hit.

Enjoy, brothers and sisters.

That was perfect. Thanks for that.. I was listening again today to those Dionne songs and trying to put my finger on what made her so great with these songs.
That's it.

Besides the Rolling Stones I'm also a huge James Bond fan and the score from the Casino Royale movie (the 1967 comedy version) is exellent, incl. the evergreen The look of Love sung by Dusty Springfield. I have it on LP and three cd versions.

Dusty and Dionne could give young singers a lesson in restraint and subtlety.
They sing the melody, but with enough of their own distinctive flair and personal depth to give the songs emotoinal weight.
