OT: Neil Young's Club Gig

As many of you know Neil Young played a "secret gig" in San Luis Obispo the other night...featured ten new songs from his new album, Monsanto Years...the taper missed recording Walk On played for the first time in 15 years, but otherwise a nice recording!

==================================================================

Neil Young performed a secret show with Willie Nelson’s sons last Thursday night, with just over 450 in attendance.

Neil performed many new songs, giving the crowd a taste of what's to come.

Basically testing out material for the new Album and Tour that will be coming later this year.

For the first set, the Zoom recorder malfunctioned and only recorded onto the left channel.

I copied the left channel into the right channel. Tracks 1 - 6 are now 2 channel mono.

The remainder of the recording is 2 channel stereo.

Neil starts set 2 with 'Walk On', but it wasn't recorded. This starts abruptly into 'Monsanto Years'.

A big thanks goes to the taper who had just enough time and was close enough to rush over and buy a ticket and record it.

Sending his recording over my way for editing and uploading.

This is the first and maybe only source for this secret gig.

Neil was backed by The Nelson Brothers and other members of Willie Nelson's band.

Neil Young - Guitar and Vocals
Lukas Nelson - Guitar
Jacob Micah Nelson - Guitar
Corey McCorkmick - Bass
Anthony Logerfo — Drums

NY is allegedly releasing an album with these folks titled The Monsanto Years this June. One can only wonder how it will be considering the half-as*ed (political) albums Neil has put out the last few years. Don't get me wrong. I love Neil's music, his concern for the environment and our world. But, when he goes into his rant stage music wise, much of it gets old quick.

This really sounds like an interesting line up. What a treat for those 450 people.

Some interesting quotes from Neil on the Stones:

Young: 'What I really liked about the Rolling Stones, was Brian Jones and Keith Richards playin' together. Even though Brian Jones was just kind of a bratty, sub-blues kind of guy. He still had the exuberance ...

'Satisfaction' was a great record. 'Get Off My Cloud,' even better record. Looser, less of a hit. More of a reckless abandon. 'Get Off My Cloud' - I know it's not as good of a song, and I know the performance is probably not as good as the 'Satisfaction' performance, maybe it is - but the thing about it is it's obviously just such a throw-together song that they came up with on the way to the studio or the night before, y'know? That's what I liked about it. It really sounded like the Rolling Stones.' "

On the song 'Borrowed Tune' from the 1973 album Tonight's The Night, Young sang: "I'm singing this borrowed tune/ I took from the Rolling Stones" to the tune of 'Lady Jane'.

May he fiannly realized that the political alternative is dead in the US (as well as in most Western countries). So he turns to the "green" sphere to bring some change.
About ten years ago a very good left-wing friend of mine dropped politics altogether and turned into an environmentalist.

Neil you're late! grinning smiley

One thing I'm pretty sure about Neil is he couldn't give a toss about what people think. His success has obviously allowed him great latitude to think for himself...if Neil is on the environmental bandwagon it's because he believes in it. His need to educate others in his later years is just a reflection of the sense of responsibility he feels for being famous and able to reach a lot of people.

Neil Young has been concerned by environmental questions for a long time : remember Mother Earth on Ragged Glory?

Neil's feel for Mother Earth goes way back. I think this is one of his first enviro tunes.

Re Daryl Hannah, is she the woman David Crosby referred to as a "poisonous predator" which led to Neil breaking off any relationship with Crosby?

Whoa... That short article made me say WHOA 3 times... whoa.

Neil's song "Mother Earth" was a highlight of the show (of many highlights) last time I saw him in person in an arena. He had his whole band that night, but he came out for that song by himself and played it so nicely. It was perfect.

This wasnt my show, but it the same tour and style

The first gig of the tour is at Milwaukee's Summerfest and I'm hoping to get tickets for that show.

Thanks for that link...What a great music streaming site site! If there is one band I can listen to as often as the Stones it's Neil and Crazy Horse. A streaming site of Stones concerts would be amazing...

Could not agree with you more. He can be a real idiot. At the old Felt Forum he was telling us not to shop at A&P! Um, I really need to hear these rants?
