At your mercy?

Good morning guys & gals,

On the recent on going topic ' what is everybody listening to' somebody mentioned bob marley's kaya and on looking in the local record shop saw it was priced at only Ā£5 so took the gamble and have to say its a nice sound.

So the question is can anybody else reccomend any other good reggae cds & is there different grades of reggae as obviously you have your commercial stuff and i would assume a heavier kind of reggae imho.

Hope to take advantage of this fine weather we are expericeing in the uk at the moment & get home from work and get the old rum & coke out & chill out.

I tend to like a lot of the 1970s stuff.

I can recommend Two Sevens Clash by Culture (in fact most Culture albums of that period are great)

Burning Spear
Horace Andy
Toots and the Maytals (a greatest hits CD is a good idea)
Abyssinians - Forward on to Zion (sometimes called Satta Massagana)
Max Romeo - War Inna Babylon

I am sure that others will have their favourites as well

Andy

Odean - buy Peter Tosh's "Bush Doctor" (the one that Mick and Keith are on). I reckon you'd like it OK

And you cant go wrong with any of the Bob Marley & The Wailers albums in that era from 1972 onwards (the ones on Tuff Gong/Island).

That Max Romeo "War Inna Babylon" that a couple of folks mention above os pretty good...and dont forget some Jimmy Cliff

As far as Marley / Wailers, the best Island albums imo are "Catch a Fire," (now a 2 cd set w/ original 'Jamaican' mix), "Burnin" & "Natty Dread", also the live radio broadcast from '73 "Talkin' Blues" (Island) issued in the 90s is way better than the other live albums. Anything on Blood & Fire label is superb. The Lee Perry 3 cd box "Arkology" is excellent (Island), as is anything by LP on Pressure Sounds, avoid the late period LPerry stuff. A superb comp on B & F "Darker Than Blue" has reggae versions of US soul material, mostly magnificent. And Roir has a few terrific reggae (dub, usually) titles including Glen Brown classic "The Way to Mt. Zion" and Ras Michael "Rastafari Dub" (w/ Tosh, Tommy McCook, etc). A nice intro box covering roughly 30 years on 4 cds is 'Tougher Than Tough," w/ a marvelous & informative booklet.

MARLEY Exodus or Exodus De Luxe edition
Ditto anything after 1972 like Gazza said, my fav: UprisinĀ“
(but there is also a box "Soul Revolutionaries: The Early Jamaican Albums",
which concludes the best from the early years concentrated to four albums.
I like it; but beware of the cheap sales-offers or "Cyprus-pressings")

PETER TOSH Legalize It

BLACK UHURU Black Sounds Of Freedom or the albums before that
