I thought it was a decent cute catchy pop song. That's his forte, cute catchy pop songs. He's damn good at writing them and plenty capable of rocking out too. When you see him perform you get a good mash up of a lot of styles, some cute and trivial and some hard and driving, it's just what he does. Like the Stones, I'm grateful we still have him around and playing shows. peace

Oh, is that what the tune in that video was? One of the best, most memorable tracks from that album (Chaos and Creation in the Backyard). He's telling it like it is: "Very twee/very me". Love that song.

The song sounds a lot like Macca's Beatles fluff but I know a lot of people like it..But in the video I posted it was more about his stage presence. Very cringe worthy..

But I am not telling anyone else not to like Macca. There is that good..

Macca in concert always seems like Pat Boone singing little Richard songs. He is not a rocker and when he tries to be one its really hard to look at.

I have never understood why anyone would care if a artist engages as audience or not..I know people who went to a Dylan concert and they complained big time that he never spoke to the audience..I find that silly..

But with Macca for 40 bucks sure I would go. But I would pray to almighty God that he didn't do something weeinie like this.I don't know if he could help it though. Because he is cheesy..

The problem has always been that McCartney has no limits to what he does musically. He does what he wants and that confuses those who wants to put his 'style' in a box. 'English Tea' is an easy target for critisism. But what people doesn't get, is that a lot of his material is done with tounge-in-cheek. His happy-go-lucky attitude irritates many, especially those who thinks that rock music shall be dead-serious. I understand that, to a certain degree.

But McCartney's music should be listened to at it's own premise and not be compared to Dylan or Lennon or Neil Young etc. His records and songs are about feeling, groove, arrangement and -not least- the COMPOSITION itself.

Sometimes the lyric has no meaning, and it has not been the intention either. The lyrics are a 'sound' in the musical expression.

It's all about aestethics: To create sounds you can be moved to and relate to! Some can relate to it, others can't. Fine. Not everybody can relate to everything what The Stones do, either.

In other words, to pass him off as 'cheesy' is only true when he does songs like 'English Tea', which are not meant to serious.

From the same record as 'English Tea', he did 'Riding To Vanity Fair', which is a whole different expressionistic affair.

The tea making gesture fit the song. Besides unless you're gonna pull a Jerry Lee Lewis type theatrics thing, the best thing a piano player/singer can do it just what Macca did....sit and play. I take it you haven't performed much on a stage stanlove. peace

He IS on the SNL 40th anny show tonight, guess he wanted a warmup! Nobody is rock history has a catalog to pick from like he has, Beatles, Wings and solo albums to choose from, we saw him in Orlando in May 2013, 37 songs, two hours forty-five minutes...incredible show!

Not preforming much has nothing to do with it..I have seen a million performences and have never seen anything that cheesy.

OK. If you don't see the silly tea making gesture as cheesy then we will have to agree to disagree. To me its one of the most cringe worthy things ever.

IF I had choose to act that out in front of an audience or Mick's performance of Lets Work on the Top of the Pops I would actually need some time to decide.

Macca is a great artist ,and I can imagine, a really nice guy.

He does things his own way and probably only had the idea of this gig a week or two ago.

Good on yer Paul. >grinning smiley<

Is he in New York to be part of the SNL 40th anniversary?

Probably so. I caught part of the show. He did one number with Paul Simon that I saw,
both playing and singing, enjoyable.

Dear lord, I just watched Macca's SNL performance. I love the man and most of his music, but his voice is GONE! Watch it. When he begins singing Maybe I'm Amazed it is painful, embarrassing.

Yes, he was having a hard time. I suspect and hope he's just having a temporary problem and unlike Mick with his cancellation in Australia, he's such a pro that he decided to do the show anyway. I saw him this summer and he had no such problems. Besides he sure puts a lot of heart and feeling into it, amazingly so.

Here is the performance with Keith's introduction:

Thanks for posting that. I don't think his voice was gone at all. He surely was having some temporary problem with it (due to his previous concert the night before, maybe?), especially on the first part of the song, but in the end it was a good performance, I think.

He hit those high falsetto notes, though. Those were spot on. And the rough/screaming parts were damn good, too. Original key, also, I believe, B-flat.

Yeah, I have to agree that his screaming parts were done quite well. Maybe his voice was weaker due to the previous might's performance, maybe due to age, who knows?

And he is 70-plus years old. And if I remember correctly, us Stones fans took a lot of heat back in 1978 when Mick's voice gave out on SNL (great guitar sounds, though).

My pleasure Cristiano, I have appreciated many of your posts. Had no idea he had done a concert the night before, makes the rough beginning more than understandable. And I totally agree by the end of the song he owned it! No maybe to it, I'm amazed. peace
