Bought Tele copy - help with pickup selection ?
Posted by: mark ()

Broke down yesterday and bought my first electric guitar. A Jay Turser Vintage Series Tele copy. Well it did not take me long playing around with the overdrive and delay to get a pretty good JJF simulated.

I started watching the FF video to try and confirm if I had picked the correct pickup setting (rear only for that lovely twang). The video clips are so tight and fast I had a hard time confirming where , if any, Keith had a prefference for pickup choice. I think he almost exclusivly had it on the rear pickup.

Any feedback on this (pun aside). When playing the tele does Keith have a pickup preference?

Mathijs and other experts could confirm it and give more info, but I believe Keith plays almost exclusively with the bridge pickup.

i think the twang comes only with the bridge position.
when you look , keef uses humbucker in neck position, its hard to imagine
that you will get the twang with a humbucker.
i play on bridge , and the treble knob is in full treble position.

cheers

I have never seen a Jay Turser, but I know they have a good reputation. Wouldn't be surprised if they are better than certain am standard-

As far as pick ups are concerned, it depends.

Single coil (traditional)

After many many different tests I opted for kinman's (www.kinman.com) woodstock plus set for my strat and I AM impressed!

Check out the cathalog, they have a Tele series as well (which I have not tested) but if they are only half as good as the strat series ...

Humbucker

On some teles Keith uses a humbucker pu at the nek position. Consider you will need to do some work on the guitar to fit the thing. That means extra money and no way you can go back to the original in case you decide to sell the guitar and keep the pu.

Just in case Seymour Duncan's is a safe choice. www.seymourduncan.com
Slightly cheaper than the Gibsons, by the way.
I installed the 55 seth lover on my LP custom (despite all the critics) and the guitar is something else now!!!

I did install the same Seymour Duncan Seth Lover pickup on my tele, neck position. I'm very happy with it.

BTW, I've got a mid-70s LP that I bought second hand with the tipical DiMarzio pickups that many people used to install back in that days. And I was thinking about installing a pair of Seth Lovers on my LP, too. I know it's a classic PAF copy (or tries to be) but didn't know about those critics you comment. Could you please shine a light on me about those critics? I suppose that as they are a copy of the vintage pickups they have a (relative) low output and shouldn't be very hot as the ceramic ones. Is this the reason of the critics??

About single coils for Tele, I like the DiMarzio Twang King set (my Tele bridge pickup is one of these)

The Seth Lovers are great: the critics were adressed to me for dumping a pair of original Gibsons!!!

Oh, those Gibson-purist-talibans!!! But you kept the original pickups, didn't you??

I did, I did. The neck one wasn't bad. But they were way too powerful for the use I make of the guitar.

As far as I know, Keith only used the PAF/Bridge pickup combination (middle position) on You Can't Always GWYW and Wild Horses in 72, 73, and 75.

About pickups: for an excellent PAF clone I would say the SD Antiguity's are the absolute best, far better than Seth Lover's and 59 Classics.

For an excellent Keith sound on the bridge pickup of a Tele: SD Broadcaster's are the only one that gave me the same raunch.

Dunno if anyone noticed it, but the bridge-position humbucker in Keefs Teles is just a joke, has nothing to do with the sound. Just look live licks: the knob is always in the high-position, so the guitar looks good, but what we hear, comes through the single coil.

If your looking for brilliant pickups at a busget price, try out the Kent Armstrongs. I put a PAF on the neck of my Epiphone Casino and a high output PAF on the bridge and it sounds totally awesome. All for £45 per pickup inc gold casing. I got mine through WD music who were very helpful, knowledgable and easy to deal with.

I haven't tried their single coils though.

By the way, Kent is son of Dan Armstrong, who designed the plexiglass guitar used by Keith and Ron.

?? Keith always has the selector in the back position, selecting the single coil bridge position. By the way, Keith pulls the low E slug of the pickup and fills it with wax.

My tele has a replacement neck pickup - a Seymore Duncan Fat Tele pickup. It's the same size as the standard Tele neck pickup - so no routing is required.

I also have a preamp in there to give some extra zip when switched in - it makes the Tele sound great.

Mine is a Jap tele so I just wanted to upgrade the neck pickup to get more of a humbucker sound...

Ian.

What???!!

Basically, it's a Telecaster with what they call a Stratocaster-type
Tex-Mex pickup in the middle. So it has 3 pickups, not 2.
They're not bad. But it's all marketing, really.

Well, all photos I've seen have Keith using the Zemaitis on Wild Horses (MJ, KR, RW
at the front mike singing) on the '75 tour, and sometimes YCAGWYW (see video from the LA Forum--and when I was there, that's what he used). Of course, he may have changed from night to night. I only mention it here 'cause the Zemaitis has (had) one pickup,
not near the bridge, but not in the middle either.

For Wild Horses Keiths changed from night to night between a Tele and the Zemaitis, and would do the same for YCAGWYW and even JJF. By the way, the first couple show of the 1975 he played Happ on a Les Paul '59 Burst. I would never expected this!
