Well, true, but probably not Sonny Rollins!

I find myself listening to Jazz more than any other style of music these days. Yesterday I was painting and I had an old Verve mixed CD and when it was done, switched to Dave Brubeck and took 5.

it'S a typical New Yorker joke alright. still the statement about jazz
in general remains. wanna discuss that. because i agree in general.

My wife and I recently went to the American Jazz Museum in Kansas City. THere was a lot of Rollins tracks at the listening stations. Good museum.

Is "Take 5" really Jazz or is it sophisticated pop music?

Good question!

And: does the title refer to the number of takes that went down before getting to this version while recording? Or did they really 'take' something in 5 units?

Questions, questions...
It's true: jazz can sometimes be overcomplicated.

Well, you can say the same thing abut Sketches of Spain.
Is it jazz or it something else? When I first heard it, I thought it sounded like a movie soundrack.

For the record, this is the one and only piece of jazz that I unequivocally love, and I'm sure it's only because I love the Steely Dan and Stevie Wonder songs that it inspired.

It's because it's in 5/4 time.

There is an artistic side to me...sadly I never explore it.

No, I was outside painting the deck...summer work! But you have to work while listening to music, makes it enjoyable!

Nicholas Payton doesn't find any of this very funny:

Not funny AT ALL. Wow. I won't be surprised if I read a follow up that tells me Nick has contacted Jesse, Al & the ACLU to protest The New Yorker. Me thinks that ole Nick needs to lighten up just a bit.

I could be wrong. Maybe tomorrow Nick will let us know that he was trying to joke on an (ineffective) level similar to the New Yorker.

Peace,
Mr DJA

Man I hate that "my community suffered more than yours" BS... And I feel for you fellow US citizens for having to deal with this type of "thinker". Call him an @shhole (which he obviously is) and you're labelled "racist". eye rolling smiley

The sad thing is this article will probably turn up for years now as an example of what Sonny Rollins felt late in life.

The even sadder thing is the supposed humorist wasn't responsible for the offending parts of LIFE.
Well it's also kind of sad when someone makes something up that is obviously an outrageous parody, and people agree with parts of it nevertheless.

You're right. Intelligent, articulate, and classy. The article was a funny piece of satire though.
