New J. Beck Group reissues
Date: June 4, 2005 19:07
Just got the new expanded "Truth" from amazon (issued by UK EMI this week) - I've only played it once - for Jeff Beck fans, or anyone interested in Ron's (& Rod's) pre-Faces work, this along w/ the expanded "Beck-Ola" is a real treat - there are sonic details I havent heard before, and Truth rounds up all the early JBG singles (Tallyman, Plimsoul, etc) now in stereo, plus some other alternates (a superior 'Blues Deluxe' minus sound effects, & You Shook Me, the latter w/ John Paul Jones on organ). Beck-Ola was issued last year, and also has several nifty outtakes worth hearing...Dont know why US Sony Legacy didnt expand these classics when they re-did them in 2001, but I'm glad someone finally did. Charles Shaar Murry's liner notes are so-so, but the music kicks ass.
Also, hearing the Birds (Ron's 1964 - 66 group) on the radio 6/1 led me back to Deram's comp, "A Guide to Rare English Birds" ('99) Anyone into early Who/Small Faces will really be a in for a treat - Ron's guitar is very crunchy/thick & there are some blistering solos, even tho RW was only age 17-19 (19 when he joined JBG) - as their posters sometimes said, "Pounding Beat & Savage Music!"
