L.S.T.N.T. / Sulivan / 2yr. Ban & Nazi Uniforms??

This was at #2 on a list of Censored Classic Rock Songs thru/ the yrs.

Obviously, everyone knows the story of switching 'Night' for 'Time', but what I've never heard or forgotten over the years is what happened AFTER they played which got them banned from Sullivan for 2 yrs.

Can anyone shed some more info about the Stones dressing as Nazis before the shows finale???

"This rollicking, sexually suggestive Stones chestnut was never banned from the airwaves, although it earned the ire of Ed Sullivan. The TV host objected to a performance of the band’s latest hit on his popular Sunday-night program until a compromise was reached: Mick Jagger would sing “Let’s spend some time together” instead of the original lyric. Jagger (unlike Jim Morrison during the Doors' performance of ‘Light My Fire’) held up his end of the bargain, even though he repeatedly rolled his eyes at the camera. After the performance, the Stones returned to the stage wearing Nazi uniforms, at which point Sullivan barked at them to put their other clothes back on. The band left the theater and was banned from the show for the next two years."

"Well my heavy throbbers itchin' just to lay a solid rhythm down"

Highly unlikely. They did Satanics Majesties after that, from which they did no promos, and were spending most of their time on acid or trying to stay out of jail. Who knows if they were even able to travel for work out of England during that summer of '67 and into '68, with drug trials hanging over their heads. I'm sure The Smothers Brothers show would have welcomed any Stones appearance, and they didn't come there, or send a promo film for Jumping Jack Flash, ala the Beatles with Hey Jude and Revolution on successive Sunday evenings the summer of '68. In fact I'm not sure the JJF promo video was shown anywhere in the states at the time.

Sullivan must have been doing good in the ratings, or at least promised them more time. They did 3 numbers in November '69, with Let It Bleed coming out and in the middle of their tour.

I have never heard this story before. I find it hard to believe that Bill Wyman would put on a Nazi uniform under any circumstances, as he spent his early childhood running down the street from their bombs.

Ultimate Classic Rock is perpetuating a rather dubious story from Michael Uslan's book "Dick Clark's The First 25 Years of Rock & Roll".

Maybe it has something to do with that picture of Brian in a Nazi uniform (with Anita)? Though I can't think what.

What about this? Was this ever aired on TV in the states (or anywhere else)?

That's really more of a warning video...not so much promotional. It screams:

"sorry but we've lost our minds for the time being. Um, we'll be back shortly and on track with a better attempt at reasonable output...he he sorry again...pass that joint..."

To tell you the truth, I think what really caused ol' Ed to flip out was the sight of an effeminate pop star blowing on a big brown flute.
