Favorite Charlie Watts moments...
Posted by: tomk ()

Don't know if this has been brought up before,
buy here we go. It's a nice, lazy Easter weekend,
and I thought I'd list some of my CW moments.
Actually, every song, every boot, every time I've seen 'em,
Charlie's been "good tonight."
I may leave out about 50 or so, but here are some that come to mind.
These are in no order, mind you.

Last fill and tag at the end of Respectable.
All of Some Girls album (credit to Chris Kimsey for that)
Last fill at the end of Hang Fire.
Drum fill near the end of Start me Up (snare to rack tom to snare)
Twirling the sticks
Fill right before the last chorus of Soul Survivor (starts with his rack tom)
Hi-hat "sneezes" in Angie
Tom-tom fills at the end of Tops
TOTA versions of If you Can't Rock Me
still using a small kit while everyone else whent for a big one
Live and studoio versions of Honky Tonk Women
Get Off Of My Cloud
Complicated
Drum fill near the end of Tumbling Dice
'75, '76, and '78 live versions of All Down The Line
China-crash cymbals--He uses them better than anyone.
Kimsey usually "gates" them (a recording term. Listen to She Was Hot)
Don Was seems to let them ring (listen to Sparks Will Fly)
"Answering" Mick's onstge shouts between songs
SNL in '78: During either Respectable or Shattered (i can't remember which),
he's riding his ride cymbal with his right hand, then crashes
his crash cymbal with an UPSTROKE, and then returns to his hi-hat.
Totally cool. A total jazz move. Watch it. Plus doing the show with suspenders.
Gimme Shelter version Of JJF
Live Whip Comes Down in '78
Shaving your head before it was cool do so
and...
MJ's annoyance at Charlie getting a longest and loudest ovation

Plus, if it is true, what better way to punch out a friend
than to get up, shave, put on a 3-piece suit and deliver the knockout punch?

The little snare roll he does during Woody's second solo on Lies.

Agree too about Soul Survivor. Charlie makes that whole song rock.

Great moments, all of them, and a reminder that the core of the Stones are these three guys--Mick, Keith, and Charlie. Without any one of them, it wouldn't be the Stones anymore.

This is a great thread already. I got to see Charlie in the mid 90's at the Henry Fonda Theatre in Hollywood. It was his Jazz outfit. Mick was in the first row.
That was just a great show all around. Charlie could not have seemed happier.

Mick, Charlie, Bill, Keith: without any of them, it wouldn\t be the Stones anymore.

Satisfaction from the VL tour. Always a pleasure. Steady beat, hard punches. All great. And the best: It was made very up-tempo. Suited the song really good. Best version of Satisfaction they ever did.

You're right: my favourite Charlie Watts moment is the whole "Emotional Rescue" LP!

What about the beginning of Ventilator blues on EOMS?
CYHMK live...
He 's the best except for the reggae where he is not so comfortable.

Hey Mathijs, Bill is a renegate, he left the band some years ago and even without him, i pretend to have seen the real RS on stage during the last tours.

Any stonesfan must admit that Bill was kinda vital for the band.
They kept on rolling quit well after he left, but it's not the same.

My favorite Charlie moment: Sway.

There are so many moments.

Hi-hat on Torn and Frayed and the fill on the fade
The only time he hits the crash on Sweet Virginia just before the end.
The fade on Rocks off when he plays a short fill on the snare and hits the crash two times in a row. Fantastic.
Tom tom sound on Casino Boogie
The endings on JJF and Satisfaction from Barcelona 1990.

The beginning of Honky Tonk Woman. Do I have to say more?
I love his playing on Sway and Can´t you hear me knocking. Awesome!
His drumming on Voodoo Lounge is superb. He beats the shit out of his drums on I go wild!

Charlie rocks! He´s da man!!!

In "Wher the Boys Go" he does these rolls (triplets) and then a rimshot when he picks it back up with the beat. I LOVE that rimshot.
I know the "sneezes" you talk about in "Angie".
In "Soul Survivor" I like the way he comes back in after Nicky's pianobreak. He starts thumping on the Floor Tom. For that matter the drumming in "Brown Sugar" is brilliant. The Floor Tom use is great.
But the best has got to be the jam in CYHMK. Because he truns the snare OFF!! He just rolls around all through the jam. Here is where CW is supergreat. He swings like no one else. But he really plays very sparsely. No snare. Then in the end buildup I love whe he goes on the bell of Ride cymbal.
You talked about him answering Jagger during the Live yells. How about when he "stris" the snare in the break of Midnight Rambler e.g? In the real low part he just keeps that ominous "shhhhh" going on the snare.
My fave moment is in the film Ladies & Gents. At the end of the show in SFM Keith turns around and plays at Charlie who leans forward and is playing so HARD and FAST. it is incredible.

Going To A Go-Go from Hampton, just before the sax enters: how Charlie keeps the beat goin g while playing a drum break. That's what I call great drumming!

That's Brian whistling in Walking The Dog.

A couple more songs that I like Charlie on are both on GYYY'S OUT. His intro to Sympathy as well as Little Queenie.

Not to mention LIV from GYYYO. The small snare rolls and hi-hat clashes when he's playing the ride.

thats my favourite too

Others include his intros to Get off of my cloud and Paint it Black and the bit just at the start of the final chorus of "When the whip comes down".

Too many to mention, to be really honest.

Charlie can be so subtle with killer results. At the end of the studio version of "Hand of Fate" Jagger is adlibbing getting more and more into his growl. At some point Charlie shifts the beat to just an on beat. 4 hits to the bar; really adds to the urgency. Or the end of "Salt of the Earth" when he goes into the gospel thing. That is one of my fave drum things: when a drummer starts whacking the crash together with the snare. Happens a lot in gospel. Also happens at the end of YCAGWYW but we all know that was Jimmy.
You know those splashes on "She's so Cold", I am not toally sure they are a Chinese crash. At first I thought so too but I'm not convinced anymore. It might be one fo the small crashes jusat recorded well. Gated and compressed. But I could be wrong...
I'm glad Gazza knows that whack in Where the Boys go. It's alwaYS GReat when two people can meet over the Atlantic via one hit on a drum LOL
I also know what those brushes on LIV on Yaya's Bars talks about. One of Charlie's greatest strengths is to support and emphasize, articulate and underline another's solo perfromance. Like in LIV Jagger's vox and Taylor's solo are both accentuated by Charlie. It's almost like Charlie understands the nuances better than anyone else and tells us where to go and when to listen up.
"OK folks here's a good one; listen for this one..."

lol, Yeah but you knew the technical terms (triplets etc). I didnt.

I ALWAYS play that bit back again every time I listen to that song.

Another part I forgot about is on the Gimme Shelter DVD when they're at Muscle Shoals studio listening to the early version of Wild Horses. In the middle of the song where there's the guitar solo, then Charlie comes in. The camera is on Charlie and he curls his lip and nods his head. Always thought that was a cool moment.
