I think that Hyde Park '69 was their bravest the most anti-warhorse setlist ever. Given the circumstances (free show, first time in years, so many people in the audience) that was really something:

1. I'm Yours And I'm Hers - a cover, never played before (and after)
2. JJF - fairly new song, not a warhorse yet
3. No Expectations - not a warhorse
4. Mercy Mercy - quite obscure song
5. Stray Cat Blues - not very often played
6. I'm Free - quite obscure, never played live before
7. Down Home Girl - quite obscure, only time ever played
8. Love In Vain - a cover, not played before
9. Loving Cup - unreleased yet song
10. Midnight Rambler - unreleased yet song
11. Satisfaction - a warhorse already
12. Honky Tonk Women - released a day before, not a warhorse yet
13. Street Fighting Man - ok, quite popular
14. Sympathy For A Devil - 20-minute jam

Great setlist!!!

True. That's a crazy setlist by today's Stones standards. They would never attempt such a thing if they did a free show after a long lay-off these days. Back in the sixties, two and a half years without touring was a long time, but they were very active in the meantime still.

Guys...there is no comparison valid between 1969 (and I was at the Hyde Park show) and today. Is the next thread to be about The Beatles playing at The Cavern?

"Satisfaction" was hardly a "warhorse" in 1969. More accurately, it was and will remain a significant rock classic.

It was the first time Stray Cat Blues was done live. And it may have been the best live version ever so far.

From my point of view:

The warhorse phenomen had not come into being at this early stage of the Stones' careeer. That belongs to times much later on, when, as a gradual development, the conservatism of their aging audiences is taking the upper hand on curiosity and lust for new material. It means the arrival of the saddening mentality of craving almost only for the old grand numbers and an indifference towards new songs. A reflection of the same phenomen might be said to be IORRians wanting the oddities from the past rather than songs from the two last decades.
