I love Star Trek too. But I like to see more than just one episode.

How many times can we analyze Midnight Rambler or Gimme Shelter?
Here's an idea: How about we just STOP analyzing them and just sit back and enjoy it for what it is. The Stones are heading into their last lap. If you don't relax and enjoy it you'll regret it once it's all over. It must be so stressful being a Stones fan for some on here. Some of the nitpicking comments I've read are unreal. How do you find time to enjoy it when you're looking at them with a microscope the entire time? Throw out your clipboard with your detailed notes on every single note they play and just get up and DANCE!

If they really want to entertain the fans, they can take their same old show on the road, continue to end with the warhorses, and switch out the small handful of "deep" cuts from show to show BUT they need to play larger venues, and they need to charge prices that all fans, young and old, can afford.

I would like to wonder if people who are critizising all the time for good and for bad are also unsatisfied with their own life?
That might be the option.
Cheer up yourself first and then try to straighten your things out before you are muffling about a band which has captured a time span in music, cultur and history which you only can dream of. smoking smiley

it's a given that we're very unsatisfied with our useless and worthless lives. but, it's much easier just to whine and complain. ironically, our propensity to whine and complain factors into why we're so unsatisfied in the first place, so it's one of those vicious circle things...or something...

Not to be too anal or anything but I'm afraid you've under-analyzed the over-analysis.

As long as the vast majority of their audience want the hits they will play the hits.

If the "greatest" rock n roll band in the world can't play more than their best hits or even an entire album as most everyone else has, then maybe they are not the greatest and just one of the greats.

You have to live up to your title not become buried in it.

dammit. i was afraid of this. it's sorta like america's credit rating and all that. i wonder if the stones realized that they were teetering on being down-graded. too late now, though.

After 50 years, the stones are still playing; and at their age, that's amazing enough for me. Who cares what they play. Warhorses require energy. Maybe when their energy runs out, they'll play sweet slow songs in small club venues. They are the greatest... Keith's AND RONNIE'S comebacks for this tour are amazing. It's not that they can't do it, but Warhorses are always fun to see live. Maybe they are not as fun as watching on PPV, but when you can sing a stones song live with 20,000+ people, all at the same time, you will have a blast. That's what rock and roll is all about.
Let them roll with the warhorses as long as they can... stop complaining. They are fun, and the band still has fun with them.

It's certainly not that they can't. It's just that Mick is locked into a formula that is more about show than the actual music. He needs the crowd to be in a frenzy to "get off", for lack of a better term.

Exactly. The problem for us hardcores and wanting more rarities is that they still have the energy of thirty year olds. Maybe when they get in their 80's we finally get them to slow down and give us what we want. Looks like were stuck with this formula for at least another decade.

right. but that's assuming they are allowed into the show in the first place. i'm proposing legislation that outlaws the vast majority. in a world where i am king there will be no vast majority. there will only be a very small, almost undetectable minority.

Shine a light showed they can do it. Their getting lazier in the old age I guess. if you removed two new songs from the set list is 1981 the newest with Start Me Up

Well here is my version of a entertaining setlist. Of course a few songs could be swapped in and out at various shows.

Just imagine if they came out and played this:

01-Brown Sugar
02-Dance Little Sister
03-Hand of Fate
04-Sad Sad Sad
05-Lets Spend The Night Together
06-Heart of Stone
07-Doncha Bother Me
08-Out of Time
09-Casino Boogie
10-Neighbors
11-Honky Tonk Women
12-Monkey Man
13-You Got The Silver
14-Before They Make Me Run
15-You Can't Always Get What You Want
16-The Lantern
17-No Expectations
18-Gimme Shelter
19-Start Me Up
20-Loving Cup
21-Melody
22-Coming Down Again
23-Satisfaction
24-Just My Imagination
25-Jumping Jack Flash

I would like to see the reaction here if Mick found Jesus or something, and they refused to play any secular material, like Dylan in 1979,

That's the kind of setlist they SHOULD be playing these days...lamentably, they would have had to start doing something like that 25 years ago to challenge the audience and establish the precedent for all the following years.
Once they locked into the largely warhorse-heavy routine in '89, there was no going back.

There are many "veteran" acts who mix in new songs, old songs, b-sides, deep cuts, "warhorses", etc. - changing things up tour to tour, sometimes even concert to concert. They play the hits, but not all of them all the time. It can be done and the masses will understand...but the Stones decided on another path years ago and stuck to it. I accept it at this point, but it didn't have to be that way.

The question is would you pay $200 to see that show? Even that stretches my limits but in the end I wouldn't want to pass it up on it and regret it forever.

If they had been doing shows like this since '89 and I knew to expect something different each tour (different songs!), I would definitely consider paying that today - even though it stretches my limits, too!

They made the warhorses into warhorses by playing the hell out of them every tour...like I said, it didn't have to be that way, but they made their choice.
