Wouldn't that make the most sense, since ... the levee was dry ??

An excellent song, I don't have any additional insights to offer other than most if not all of the original article seems right to me. My hats always been off to Don for writing a LONG song that turned out to be a hit without getting shortened and for writing a song that meant something.

maybe - but is it worth driving to?
a drought-dried river with a disappointingly non-functional quay is a more fitting metaphor in my ears,
but you can hear it whichever way you want, for free :E

the song is good (whether or not i share all the sentiments it expresses), and for sure there's a lot of meaning to unpack.
some of the interpretations in that article seem farfetched to me, and some are just wrong
(for example a lot of the stuff about SftD) but ... on with the show
let's do Rip This Joint next :E

LOL!! ohboy we need a "deconstruct the stones lyrics line by line" thread.
uh, no we don't.

A very thorough job. I am sure the Lennon/Marx line is not a reference to Groucho but a pun on the name Lenin as well as a refering to John's left wing politics. Also the "sacrificial rite" seems to be a reference to the killing of Meredith Hunter.

I always took the 'jester' as Holly himself. Just a few months before his death he had performed for Queen Elizabeth at the Royal Variety performance.

>Bob Dylan played a command performance for the Queen and Prince Consort of England. He was *not* properly attired, so perhaps this is a reference to his apparel.

that 'fact' is absolute nonsense. Bob Dylan has NEVER performed in front of the Queen or in any Royal Command Performance.

This is the first time I feel this forum can be haunted. This is scary. A mysterious, non-ending post about dead heroes, then its resurrection almost three years after. These memories belong to no one, to every one.

Bjornulf, this is a real compliment. Your creation is floating somewhere in History.

Another great song talking of a levee is "When the Levee Breaks" by Led Zeppelin.

Tom Petty talks about a levee is "It'll All Work Out"

The Grateful Dead "ran down to the levee" in "Friend of the Devil"

all great tunes.

"You're traveling through another dimension -- a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. That's a signpost up ahead: your next stop: the Twilight Zone!

You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension: a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You've just crossed over into... the Twilight Zone.

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call "The Twilight Zone".

"Jack Flash sat on a candlestick"? The singer is saying that Mick is a flaming homosexual.
