Martin Scorsese and Stones references
Posted by: troubador ()

So what's behind Marty Scorcese's obsession with "Gimme Shelter?" He's used it in his last 3 mob movies--Goodfellows, Casino and now The Departed. I know he's got a hard-on for Stones classics--Tell Me and Jumping Jack Flash in Mean Streets; Monkey Man also in Goodfellows...but the same song three times in a row? How bout trying I'm Free or Turd on the Run?

By the way, Its way past time for Scorcese to put out Mean Streets as a soundtrack...probably the most influential rock soundtrack ever--listen to the backing to Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction or Jackie Brown, and you'll hear what i mean...

Don't forget "Memo From Turner" in Goodfellas and "Long Long While" in Casino.

Any others?

I just got back from seeing The Departed. I thought his use of Gimme Shelter was sort of weird in this one.

It's used in the opening scenes which is great. But then later, he uses it again (this time the Rape Murder part), then (and I can't remember if this is one long scene, or two different ones) in the middle of Gimme Shelter, it goes back the beginning notes, it almost seemed like a screw up, i thought the tape must have screwed up at first. I'd like to see the movie again to verify though.

Great movie though. I though DiCaprio was great, as was Matt Damon. Even Nicholson, who seems to just play himself a lot was great as the boss. Scorsese rocks!

Wasn't looking too good, but I was feeling real well.

I noticed that too. The song seemed to bounce around in the middle of the movie. I like the way it was used in the beginning of the movie- very much in the foreground. It seems like it was louder than it was in Casino and Goodfellas- where it was more like background music.

I just checked the imdb and didn't see Robbie Robertson's name listed in the credits. Too bad - he & Scorsese work really well together. Hell, I thought the soundtrack was the best thing about Casino.

I was surprised to find that R.R. didn't work on Goodfellas, though - that movie probably has the greatest use of rock n' roll music in film ever.

Thanks for the review, Cindy - I'm gonna try to check it out next week. Oh, and please tell me you saw it at Liberty Tree!

The soundtrack to Goodfellas was good but everytime I hear Layla now I get creepy images of bodies rolling out of dumpsters and guys hanging from meat hooks in freezers lol.

Hey Frank,

Did you notice when Let It Loose was playing, the dialogue was timed so that when Nicholson was saying something like "don't refuse me, or don't turn me down" or something to that effect, right after that on Let It Loose you hear the line "something's there you can't refuse".

It must have been on purpose I think.

Yeah they must have timed it that way.

Overall the choice of songs was good but there were some hip hop sounding songs towards the middle where he could have used more Stones stuff.

so was it up there with Goodfellas and Casino story-wise?

I wouldn't put it on the same level as Goodfellas and Casino but it was very good- maybe the best movie I've seen so far this year.

All the actors- Damon, Nicholson, DiCaprio, Walberg, Baldwin etc. gave good performances.

As an added bonus saw the trailer for the next Matt Damon movie also starring Deniro and Pesci- about the formation of the CIA years ago. Not sure if that one is directed by Scorcese or not.

I liked this one better than Casino, but not as much as Good Fellas. That's one of my top 3 movies of all time.

Goodfellas is the best of all the modern mob movies. In some ways I even like it more than Godfather. The pace is much quicker.

Donnie Brasco is another great mob movie. Very underrated.

Looking forward to Departed and to Scorsese filming of Stones concert at the Beacon. Hope I am there.

CYHMK was in Casino through a whole scene on the gambling process, but *not* on the double-cassette soundtrack, much to my disappointment.

You got that right!
I just got home from work and heard that Marty won on the radio on my way home.

Has Leonardo DiCaprio won an Oscar yet? If not he's next in line...

Wouldn't that be nice if he did ? I can't wait to see this doc. Anyone have the faintest idea how the editing or whatever is going, and more to the point ... when it might be released ? I'm becoming very impatient.

For his next movie....at least for me, he can explain The Departed to me. I did not get it? Were Martin Sheen AND Mark Walburg both bad guys? Other than that I liked the movie, bought the DVD and watched that...I am still lost.

Debuts at Sundance in September. Out on DVD probably around Christmas. I guess the editing is going fine. Supervised by ACADEMY AWARD WINNING director Martin Scorsese.grinning smiley

Will Jennifer Hudson be playing the part of Lisa?

Too bad about the way these stupid awards things put such different films against each other; Little Miss Sunshine was won of the best movies I've ever seen. I was able to UNDERSTAND that one! I agree, I need the Cliff Notes, or whatever to follow The Departed.

Hmm, I thought its debut was at the Toronto Film Festival in September.

You're absolutely right my dear, they DID. But is it true ?

The Cannes article was entirely speculative. That aside, kudos to MS on a long- deserved honour. I'm happy for him.

A long time coming, sixth time lucky in fact. He said in his acceptance speech "Could you double-check the envelope?"
