Ive come to the conclusion that the Stones are having a joke on us. I can't possibly imagine that they would go out with a musical "whimper". Think of it. How many times have they messed with people?
That is why I just have to believe that GRRRR is a joke, like the press conference/5th Avenue gig in 75.
If they aren't joking and this is real well...so be it! There is nothing we can do. It's not like they read what the 20 or so of us write on this board so there is no way they are going to appease us.
I'm not being an apologist for them or defending them or whatever...We should look at the facts:
1) They are OLD MEN!
2) They ceased being a cohensive unit sometime ago
3) They likely have more money than their great grand children will spend
4) They do have a sense of humor and like to mess with people
5) They have been more of a "live" band vs. recording artists since 1973. What I mean is their stage shows are far better than the actual songs the tour supports.
Why should we expect ANYTHING from them?
If GRRR isn't a joke, really.. who cares? Let's face it....they will never be the Jimmy Miller Era band that everyone would love to have them be...just once more!
It's likely the two new songs are going to be a mediocre rocker (more Don't Stop instead of Gimmie Shelter) and a semi lame ballad (Keys to Your Love instead of Wild Horses oreven This Place is Empty).
On with the Show!!
All true, Cafaro.
Just let me add a few other important facts:
1. The Stones managed to make a very good deal with Universal (I don't think it was easy in an ever declining music carrier (CDs, DVDs, etc) market.
2. Universal obviously wants to make money too.
3. When it comes to writing songs, the band always works with high standards (we're not talking about taste here), so they don't want to put out rubbish.
4. Universal bought rights of songs that have been put on the market already too often, so they have to come up with new ideas.
5. The new ideas:
a) a great "Shine a Light" DVD / Blue Ray
b) Re-release of "Exile on Main St." .... yes, with BONUS CD (and great marketing: great sales among both young and old fans)
c) re-release of "Some Girls" with even better BONUS CD (however, poor marketing, floating too much on the success of "Exile")
d) creating (they hope so) a new market of youngsters using flashy new smart phone technology and apps and creating a hype, ending up with "Grrr!"
The latter idea was not meant for us ancient fans (we can at any time download the two news songs anyway), but hopefully attract young people to buy all those ancient songs.
e) we still don't know, but can do some guessing: the contract is still going on for some time, so more has to come ANYWAY. No rush, there still is a next year.
With Charlie celebrating his 50th year in 2013, who knows? New CD, DVD, concerts. Just let's wait patiently (we ancient die-hard fans have done that so often and were never really disappointed ... if we're honest. We still can get excited, for good or bad. The Beatles are already history for ... 42 years. Thinks of it!)
