From my memory, I thought I was seeing things from the blotter going around that day, so I asked my friend, who I went with if he remembered if anyone filmed this?

He said.."Bingo, don't you remember that big, big really big guy filming?"

I laughed and thought it must've been the blotter...I guess I was wrong.

Was it as hot then as it is now? I have no idea. Are The Rolling Stones responsible for "global warming"? Ha ha.

I was at this show also, first time I saw them outdoors. To be honest I wasn't impressed. Prior to that show saw them '72 MSG and '75 MSG.

Jagger's voice was shot to hell that day, plus they played with a degree of sloppiness

Indeed, it was the first of the outdoor shows on the 1978 tour and my first Stones show (one week after graduating from high school). After 30 minutes of Peter Tosh and an hour of Foreigner, the Stones made everyone wait for 90 minutes and them played for a measly 85 minutes, most of which was devoted to Some Girls, which was only a week old and which most of the audience had likely not yet heard, let alone grown to enjoy. Jagger was audibly sick and croaked his way through the show. All hell nearly broke loose when they didn't play an encore, bottles flying at roadies, etc. A noon start time, the whole show was over by 5:30 pm. Very disappointing.

Correction: Franklin Field is still standing near the University of Pennsylvania and is UPenn's home stadium and was the home of the Philadelphia Eagles until they moved into Veterans Stadium downtown in 1971.

Demolished after being condemned in 1989, JFK Stadium was a completely different venue that was further downtown in the sports complex adjacent to the Spectrum (soon to be demolished, if it hasn't been already) and Veterans Stadium (demolished in 2004). It was a single-level bowl that could fit up to 100,000 people, but it was an awful dump: no backs on the cold metal seats, waterwalls for urinals, entrance gates that were about the width of a house doorway (perfect for crushing general admission crowds), etc. I can't imagine that anyone misses the place.

If I recall correctly, Citizens Bank Ballpark, home of the Philadelphia Phillies, was built on the land that JFK Stadium formerly occupied. The sports complex is currently occupied by Lincoln Financial Field (home of the Eagles), Citizens Bank Ballpark, and the Wachovia Center (formerly the First Union Center or the FU Center, home of the 76ers and the Flyers).

Different building. JFK was known as Philadelphia Stadium. For years and years, it was the home of the Army-Navy football game. The Beatles played there in 1966. Anyway, the Stones show there in 1978 was rock n roll all the way. Some fans were upset because they didn't play Midnight Rambler, but that wasn't what it was all about. It was a real rock n roll show with a bunch of three minute rockers. Keith had a blast. I never saw him so peppy.

I was there that day, overcast, light rain - stayed up almost all night outside the gates of JFK the night before.. Foreigner were really good. It was a thrill for me to see the Stones for the first time, but Mick was a bit sick.. taking big swigs off the bottle of Rebel Yell whisky they had on stage to keep up. Highlight for me was Whip Comes Down - new song, very raw, great guitars. No encore, and a mild riot as the Stones flew off in their helicopter.

It is always puzzling to hear of the reported poor shows of the 78 tour. I suppose the two most famous are Cleveland and Philly. The Stones could not have been better a month later in New Orleans.

I'd be willing to wager had he been in that condition today, they would have rescheduled that show due to Mick's voice not being top notch that day.

It was built for the 1926 Sesquicentennial celebration of the United States. Later it was called The Philadelphia Municipal Stadium, then in 1964 it was renamed JFK.
It housed the Eagles for a short time, the Army-Navy game for many, many years, and the Police Department ran their "Thrill Show" every year there for a number of years also.

I beg to differ. Unlike modern stadiums JFK could hold 100,000 people comfortably, and the acoustics were far better then any modern stadium today because of the height of the walls and the shape. Not much bouncing around in there. Hershey Stadium is similar but not as large. And if I remember correctly, people bitched about the same exact things after the Stones concert there in '06. I was there in Hershey, and the sound that night was incredibly good for a stadium show.
The bathrooms were nasty, and the entrances were small, but the beauty of the architecture and the sound was fantastic for a stadium. A lot of folks in Philly area were sad to see that place go.
The City of Philadelphia let it rot from pure neglect. And the "connected" sports owners had more than something to do with it. Think Flyers and Sixers, they do have something in common.

JFK trivia:
the last band to perform a concert there................The Dead
the last band to perform there.......the Stones for the two 1989 dress rehearsals

The Stones made the fans wait.

That's what they did at Altamont despite bring aware of what was happening.

I know this show gets a bad rap, but I've always liked the bootleg. Don't know why, I just always have. You can tell they threw in Satisfaction in the middle to get the crowd going. I'll bet more than half the audience didn't have Some Girls yet and more than that didn't know what hell Let It Rock was.

Another bit of info on JFK Stadium: it was the site of the first Jack Dempsey-Gene Tunney fight. Their second fight (the famous one with the long count) was held at Soldier Field in Chicago, another '78 tour stop.
