The Stones are the top of the heap. Depending on what they have going on, if they were/are on tour, what they are prepping to do it goes up and down.... but no matter what when certain Stones songs come on, especially when they come on in a surprising place, it always makes me entusiastic.

I'm nowhere near as big a fan as I was a decade ago. I rarey listen to them quite sparingly these days. I guess I have developed other interests.

Hard to say, many of the years seem like a blur.

I will say that 97/98 were one peak. That was around the time I first saw them live, and I was still discovering some of their music having only been a fan for 2 years or so, and for a while after I saw them I was still going on momentum from seeing them.

This past year was another peak, with all the archive stuff and Texas '78.

So 97/98 and 11/12 are probably the two times where my excitement/love have been at their height.

1964-66...10 The only long-hairs that mattered to me. Otherwise mostly black music.
1967........ 5 They got too hippie-ish for me
1969-71...10 I got hippie-ish
1972........12 Exile and MSG!
1973-77...11 Half continued Exile addiction, half I loved all their new stuff too
1978........10 Still crazy about them, but Bob Marley took over my 11-spot
1979-07....9 Again they're my favorites, but music slightly less important to me
2008-10....7 Still my favorites, but movies replace music as my favorite thing
2011.........6 Music re-asserts itself in my life, but the Stones are MIA. SuperHeavy, Damian, Rihanna etc!
2012.........5 Stones still MIA. Rihanna, dancehall, and the top 100!

Since I first heard them in 78 i'd say a 10 every year till 2008. Post SAL I've had a lot of money and job problems which mean I have other stuff to deal with and can't afford to spend money on Stones stuff.

On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate your level of enthusiasm for the Rolling Stones during the following years?

Here's mine

1964 9
1967 10
1972 5 Stopped following the Stones
1978 0
1986 0
1991 0
1998 0
2003 10 Began following the Stones Again.
2007 10
2012 10

I'm curious why you chose the years you did. I would have picked years that they toured, which some of yours are. But anyway....

1964 - I was 4 years old - 0
1967- I heard the radio hits and my older brother's albums - 6
1972 - Full fledged fan since hearing Ya Yas - 10
1978 - Fanatical fan in this year of my first Stones concert - 10+
1986 - Still a big fan; bummed they hadn't toured since 1981 - 9
1991 - Still a big fan; glad they had gotten back together in 89 - 10
1998 - Same as above. Missed the VL, BTB & NS tours but still my favorite band - 10
2003 - stoked after finally seeing them again on the Licks Tour - 10
2007 - Still a big fan after seeing two great shows on BB Tour - 10
2012 - Hoping they will, in Keith's words, "give it one more bash." Know they might not. My enthusiasm is pending on news of a tour.

Up and down, on average.

Where is it at today? (2012)

In the average. Depends on what release I listen to.

Overall. All things considered.

Overall, considering all things, average.

OK. A 5 or 6 then for 2012.

They haven't done anything in 2012.

For those of you keeping score at home, that's 48 years with an average
enthusiasm level of 9.065

I win!!!

I just ran your numbers in Minitab -here are the results _

As you will see 8.5 is the actual mean. Your're rounding off, which is ok -because 5 or higher is legit!

Descriptive Statistics: C1

Variable N N* Mean SE Mean StDev Minimum Q1 Median Q3
C1 10 0 8.500 0.806 2.550 5.000 5.750 9.500 10.250

Variable Maximum
C1 12.000

For example, my enthusiasm levels today are running very high due to the anticipation of things to come later this year.

Here's something:

1968 - 10 - it's hard to not have 1968 be a 10 with Jumpin' Jack Flash and Beggars out that year

1969 - 10 HTW, TTP,D and Let It Bleed, of course...

1970 - 10 - but only if I listen to Ya-Ya's. If I go January 1 to December 31 - a year - without listening to Ya-Ya's then it's a zero. Quite often 1986 is a zero.

1976 - zero. They didn't do anything.

1979 - 7 They released Time Waits For No One

very little of it had to do with loyalty, except to myself. the stones got
me off the best of anybody or anything (commercial) during most of those years.
i mean, look how enthusiastic i still am now even at the 5 level. writing all
this shit...
