Earliest Stones Shirts?
Posted by: bitman ()
Date: February 17, 2012 03:49

Hello,

Long time Stones fan, first time poster.

I was curious if anyone knows what the earliest Stones' t-shirt was? I love the vintage stuff and have a mint 1972 North American Tour shirt, and it's the earliest example of a Stones' shirt I've ever seen.

If anyone knows of any examples earlier than that pleast let me know and if you have pictures, let's seem them. Thanks! smiling smiley

This one is earlier than that, but it's not official, it's homemade and given to Mick by a fan before finding its way onto the Sgt Pepper cover.

Well, I wasn't around back then, so I don't really know how things worked at concerts. But as far as tour merchandise, I don't really hear about much of it from the old days, for any band. I've never heard of a Beatles tour shirt or anything like that. The Stones around '71-'72 is the first example I know of (not saying they were the first) with actual tour merchandise, or at least as we know it today, with shirts and stuff. Maybe those who were around back then can clear it up, but that is the first example I know of.

There were programs of varying quality at concerts during up to and possibly including 1967 European Tour, but I don't think there were any official t-shirts.

Hold on - wasn't there a reference to the Stones on the cover of Sgt. Pepper?

You mean the doll with the homemade Stones shirt in the picture above?

I've seen a 1968 Jimi Hendrix at Winterland t-shirt. That's the earliest rock t-shirt I know of. Considering all the merchandise of the 60s seems odd the t-shirt wasn't really part of it. Seems to me the t-shirt didn't gain popularity until the 70's. Today it's the only thing some bands are selling at concerts.

I remember reading an interview w/Lennon from 1980 in which he was described as wearing a "Mick Jagger t-shirt" which he says he got at a Stones show in 1971.

That rings a bell.

The Stones are the only band I've ever seen that wore their own gear. But that was in the early days, and band shirts were apparently somewhat new, so I don't think it was probably considered lame back then like it would be now.

This one always cracks me up. Not because Taylor is wearing a Stones shirt, but because the tank top and eyeliner don't particularly suit him.

I liked it when Taylor went a bit glam. I think at first it was hit and miss but around 74 he was starting to get a look. In the videos from GHS and IORR.
I am a big advocate of make-up and all that crap.

You might iron them before putting them on display...

Frankotero, you're right. It wasn't until the 70's that T-shirts became "important." I've always thought that the majority of Stones T-shirts were less than great. I'm sure 3 or 4 are notable but they don't come immediately to mind.

Matt Lee might have good thoughts on this.

I'm quite sure that when the Stones played at the Forum in Los Angeles in 1969 that there were no shirts for sale. If there had been virtually every one of the 20,000 plus people there would have bought one. Bluzdude might have some pertinent memories?

At that time in 1969 Los Angeles was definitely "home base" in the US for the Stones.

So is the 1972 Tour the first example of the Stones' merchandising shirts? Where there no Altamont shirts?

I went to several Stones concerts in the UK in the Sixties and can't remember any teeshirts or any other 'memorabilia' for sale other than poor quality progs, although these are very collectable of course.

What's the earliest prog anyone has got?

I picked up a Stones "European Tour 1973" jumper/sweater at a charity shop for €1 a few days ago. Red-ish jumper with a big tongue on it. Lovely.
