Well, it was bandmates who attached them. (See quote below.) But I might have incorrectly remembered this "attaching" as their "removal"...or it's possible I remembered right and the women in his family were trying to counter the "bad influences" of his bandmates!

Sometimes people crash out on the couch. They started tying things into my hair when I was asleep. I'd wake up and go, What's that thing ringing in my ear? (laughs) But they're sanctified, these little trinkets."

okay so we were both wrong - it was friends, not family.
he's also said that taking them out is Not Done - they have to grow out naturally.

Keith first one to fall asleep? and based on that video it happened more than once.

I guess I'm the only one who thinks it looks cool as hell. Charlie said Keith had ratchets in his hair.

Good think Lisa and Blondie didn't shave his eyebrows while he was asleep.

He'd have to wear big sunglasses or a low-slung fedora.
