Are Blu-Rays similar to DVDs in that there are different versions for different regions, or do they play on any machine around the world?

DVD are PAL (Europe & parts of Asia) & NTSC (America & Canada). And there are regions: DVD region code

There is no PAL or NTSC in Blu Ray but there are different regions: A, B & C.

Here's a great website to help you with Blu Ray Region Cdoes & which titles are region free or region locked:

Blu-Ray Region Code Info

"Region A list contains releases from United States, Canada and Asian nations such as Japan, Korea and Hong Kong."

"Region B list contains releases from Europe, Australia and New Zealand."

"Region C list contains releases from Russia and India."

Region ABC = region free and will play on any Blu Ray player.

So on CDJapan The Rolling Stones / Let's Spend The Night Together [Blu-ray] is listed as Region A. Therefore it'll only play in the "United States, Canada and Asian nations such as Japan, Korea and Hong Kong".

Beats me why I'm thinking of getting that Blu-ray since I'm in Region B (Ireland to be exact). Just noticed the Blu-ray release is Region A sad smiley

yes Youngie I just confirm that this is a fantastic upgrade ! For a 31 years ago footage it is excellent (was sure because of the era samples seen on Being Mick).
On a big screen this is really nice to see all the details.
It's even better than the Biggest bang DVD set (not the Bluray).
If you compare Texas 78 Bluray and that one it'just 3 years but the 81 quality is much better.
The PCM Audio is perfect too (I cannot listen to the 7.1 ch). Worth the price.

Thanks for the info pal. Sounds fab. Only problem is it's Region A and I can't play it over here LOL.

Is LSTNT still sped up on Blu Ray (like the DVD) or is it at the correct speed now? thumbs up

It'd be nice but if it wasn't shot in blu ray how can it be shown in blu ray?

Theatrical releases are filmed, and have been for decades, at a resolution that far surpasses blu ray. But not all blu rays are the same, just as the quality varied between DVDs. When an old film like LSTNT is being transferred, the quality of the final product will depend on how much money has been spent on the restoration (i.e. physical cleaning of the original film and digital processing).

So LSTNT is not available to buy in Europe? Just wondering why the BD is only for sale in Japan.

Japan must have exclusive rights for LSTNT Blu-Ray only. No doubt Europe will eventually see LSTNT on Blu-Ray but we'll be waiting eye rolling smiley

It is absolutely correct speed.
Studio Canal has released it. I sent them a mail weeks ago to ask for a European release, no answer.

Any news on the European release? Toomuchforme, what are you playing it on? My BR player is my PS3 and I'm not sure it would play a region A BR...

In the meantime one more reason to miss the "green devil" it seems...

They should include the whole NJ Shows as well as the AZ show film as a bonus. I wonder if the whole shows were indeed filmed and if so where are they? I never heard of any outtakes. Is there any?

The funny/strange thing is that another version of this movie, called "Rocks Off", has the track "When the whip comes down" as well.
I saw it on German Television years ago (in 1989), but never saw that version again, all others (LSTNT and Time is on our side) are missing that one as the second song.

There are two versions: 16:9 and the original 4:3

I compared this 16:9 clip to my 4:3 dvd:
This 16:9 seems to be cropped from the 4:3 footage.

Which is strange, if it's so, since the movie was originally widescreen (at least 16:9 wide). It was then cropped to 4:3 for vhs and dvd. And then (at least that LIB clip) cropped again from that 4:3.
