If I recall, the decision to do the Steel Wheels record and tour wasn't made until January 1989. I don't think they would record that quickly these days for a whole album. Evidently, preparations for a major tour (logistics, promotions, stage design, etc. etc.) can be done in nine months or so.

I would say the "drop dead date" for major Stones activity next year is coming up soon.

I now see them doing some sort of pay per view events or events. i dont see a majot worldwide tour .

You're probably right that there's some sort of agreement already, Gaaza.

Despite their public insistence to the contrary, there appears to be.

The scale and scope of it all is another issue, I suppose.

I agree. I remember in '72 it was a lottery system to get tix to see them at Madison Square Garden. At the time the media billed it as the "hottest" ticket in town.

Can you imagine the complaints on here if they decided to do only 50 shows in selected cities for their 50th Anniversary? That's assuming they don't care about setting revenue records.

While we're waiting Jagger needs to keep the vaults open. More concert dvd's,live albums,outtakes,etc. There are at least 3 other '78 shows that were filmed. '75 la forum. Hal Ashby filmed 4 '81 shows.

The Stones might tour in some way or do a short amount of shows next year. Until then, life goes on.

January 1, 2012, if no one knows, life still goes on. And at that point the Stones might tour the next year.

And on and on it goes. At this point it's all a might.

But one could say 1984 with Rewind being the finale. Or Forty Licks and the Licks tour.

Serious prep and a series of new recording sessions should have started
about Jan 1 2009.

But if the market is there and a rich enough offer materializes, they've
got plenty of time to pull it together, especially if they decide to fall back
slightly to the Hall of Fame sanctioned date of June 2013.

think people here may be overestimating the market for this. another thing that

Just read 2005 rolling stone interviews. Mick said that when Charlie was diagnosed with cancer (june 2004) they had already signed on to do the ABB tour (and were already writing songs)

yes..a tour they then didnt announce until May 2005. Its not as if they decide something and then announce it to the world right away.

And on this occasion, if they're not planning to make a new album, then there's absolutely no urgency required at all...

The 'already writing songs' thing is a bit misleading anyway. Quite a few songs on ABB were written (but either not used or not finished) for Jagger's 'Alfie' soundtrack several months before they got together to make a Stones album. 'Laugh I Nearly Died' was certainly one, and I'd guess that 'Streets of Love' and 'Biggest Mistake' were as well.

The Stones don't *have* to do anything; it's their decision and their choice. That said - the Stones WILL do something in 2012.

The biggest problem (for lack of a better word) is the fans moaning about dates and (worse yet) griping about the way Keith plays, the way Mick sings, the way the Stones have the back-up people on stage, the way they comb their hair and the way they tie their shoes.

"Brothers and sisters, calm down......". It will happen when it happens.

the stones havent toured for 4 years and had no inclination to do so, so obviously dont enjoy it anymore, they havent produced a brand new album either, so dont enjoy doing that either, they might surprise us with something huge in 2012 but i doubt it,
