Shame. Great actor, and 77 is too young.

Fecking great actor - I was glued to the TV watching I Claudius back in the day. There seems to be a Stairway to Heaven going on this year and last with a lot of the greats we have all grown up with.

Will always remember him for the infamous chest burster scene in Alien. RIP.

Superb actor. Especially loved him in Jim Jarmusch's "The Limits of Control".

RIP John.

Great actor. He was exellent in many movies, but I liked him the most in The Hit from director Stephen Frears with also Terence Stamp and Tim Roth.

R.I.P. John Hurt.

That scene will always be seared into my mind.

He was also fantastic as the @#$%&-like tyrant from V For Vendetta. He had such a striking voice.

He was also in Jarmusch's "Only Loves Left Alive", a very unique and cool take on the vampire genre with Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston.

Thanks, I will look for that, since I adore "The Limits of Control".

I bought and watched "Only lovers left alive" on blu ray a year ago, it's a very unique, slow, but interesting movie and I watched it in the middle of the night, which was a strange, but very relaxed and cool experience.

Don't expect a "Twilight"-like movie, because it isn't!

I Claudius was fantastic. I can remember watching a re-run of it as a 13 year old, and then, as they say, the rest is history. Latin O Level, Classical Civilisation O, and then A Level, Latin A Level, Ancient History A Level. Eventually, three years' later a First Class degree in Classics, and then a Masters in the Reception of the Ancient World.

I like to think that John Hurt's bonkers portrayal of a lunatic Julio-Claudian emperor, Caligula, put me on the way to academic success. I still view I Claudius with a view of sentimentality, enjoyment, and some classical inaccuracy too.

I also liked Hurt in Dr Who; he was brilliantly jaded, and head and shoulders above the excellent Matt Smith and David Tennant.
