Found him without searching him ;Jerry Reed. What a great guitar player!! True original, great singer, great song writer and very funny guy. He wrote "Guitar Man" and Elvis fell for that song commanding his team to look for Jerry; once they located Reed , Jerry was fishing somewhere down south, they brought in the studio where he recorded the song with the king. Jerry used strange guitar tunings .

I dislike most things twangy country, so it takes someone pretty special to make me a fan of theirs and Jerry did it... long long ago... and then his good acting parts

The Waterboy- Coach Red Beaulieu, Smokey and the Bandit- Cledus, Gator- Bama McCall
W.W. and the Dixie Dancekings- Wayne, Harper Valley U.S.A.- Host and more...

And as kid (and adult) I loved his funny songs... like Amos Moses

and "She Got the Goldmine, I got The Shaft"

Jerry does deserve a lot more recognition than he gets...
His resume is quite impressive... just on his IMDB page alone

I knew him mainly from his wacky tune Amos Moses from 1970 and later his goofy roles in several Burt Reynolds movies - it wasn't until later I discovered he was a guitar player to be reckoned with.

Jerry Reed And Chet Atkins - Jerrys Breakdown

And then his quirky cover of Goodnight Irene with the Hully Girlies from 1962 - quite different from most versions!

Great player and good songwriter. I always liked his "aw, shucks" good ole boy personality.

A pretty good balance of cheesy and cool.

He did some hilarious tunes (Moses), some great tunes (Guitar Man) and some horrible awful bad tunes (any ballad).

The dude was a trip!

If it isn't twangy it isn't country in my opinion.

I found that people who are really good at doing something reach an even higher level when they have a good sense of humor. There are lots of musicians who are super great players but they are very stern probably because they know they are good at what they do and they take themselves very seriously (prog rockers from 70's, Ritchie Blackmore, Mick Taylor etc..)
Jerry is totally the opposite of that, he is/was just a riot! Makes me want to listen to him even more.
Rock and roll,

Yes, and he also sang the soundtrack tune East Bound and Down:

Kind of sounds like a Jim Croce song ala Bad Bad Leroy Brown...but not as good as a Jim Croce song.

Jerry Reed on Scooby Doo

And here's the alternate unplugged acoustic bootleg deluxe version:

Pretty Mary Sunlight

And finally the original rare version from an unknown band c.1970.

Pretty Mary Sunlight

Amidst all this research, I discovered some other valuable trivia...
Casey Kasem provided "the voice of Norville "Shaggy" Rogers in the Scooby-Doo franchise from 1969 to 1997, and again from 2002 until 2009".!!!!!!! I did not know that!!!smiling bouncing smiley

For many years I thought that Jerry Reed was only an actor. I knew him mostly from the Walter Matthau/Robin Williams early 80s comedy The Survivors. I got to know the song Amos Moses from the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas soundtrack. That's when I discovered that he was an amazing guitarist. My favorite song would be You Took All The Rambling Out Of Me, which was featured on the Grand Theft Auto V soundtrack.

It is truly worth going through Jerry's catalogue, because there are some incredible songs within his canon which capture some really thick and greasy grooves. Jerry could play, and while some things are better than others, the stuff he did in the 60s up thru the mid-70s is packed with great sides.

Guitar Man, US Male, and Thing Called Love are some of his greats.

I also like his version of Alabama Jubilee, albeit not a patch on Jerry Lee's.
