My symbolic ending for the Rolling Stones

I read Bill Wyman's first book Stone Alone. He ends it at the Hyde Park concert in 1969. I never read the second book. It felt funny to me the way he treated Hyde Park as an end to an era. From the perspective of a relatively "new" fan (1971) it really seems like Hyde Park was a warm up for a beginning of a whole new era for the Rolling Stomes.

For me Glastonbury 2013 is the perfect symbolic ending for the Rolling Stones. They were on fire, the audience was young and having a great time, there was something in the air. It just seems so fitting as the true spiritual ending for the Rolling Stones. They even had Mick Taylor on stage for a few songs. Glastonbury seems like the high water mark for the 2012 and later Rolling Stones.

I wish them the best and they did pretty well in 2014, 2015, and 2016. For all I know they will even play in 2017 and 2018. But if you had to find a symbolic ending and a crowning achievement, then for me it's Glastonbury.

If they continue to tour I doubt that they will sell out most of their shows, unless they do a "Give Back" tour where tickets are a flat $30 USD.

Glastonbury is it. If they ever make that movie about the Rolling Stones, it should end with the Glastonbury show. Just my opinion.

I agree with you re Glastonbury.

HOWEVER, Bill was right regarding Hyde Park. Brian's death was the end of
an era and both the band and the audience knew it.

Bill was right. Hyde Park was the the end of the Brian Jones era. And when Bill left he knew that the band was on overtime. Sure he could have stayed and collected more money bags.
But he was right about the artistical status of the band.

Yeah Brian leaving the band paved the way for the band to REALLY get good. The band got alot better without Jones.

We can always count on Mistra Knowitall.

Yes, Brian became a mess. But there was a time when he counted for something
within the Rolling Stones, who would not have existed without him.

It was more then he was just a mess. After the early days he didn't add much to the band at all. When Mick Taylor joined they had a guy who added a ton more then Jones.

I find Jones to be totally overrated. One of those people that because they died young people feel the need to overrate them. Jones is well known because Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were extremely talented. And please don't bother bringing up that it was he that started the band or that it was his equipment. If thats your claim to fame then it only makes my point.

I agree. Whether he was a genius or not, the Stones imo became a better band after he left/died. Nevertheless their early years are fabulous.

I wonder how things would have unfolded if Brian wasn't a "mess". They were already changing direction with Beggars and Let It Bleed. Maybe they would have continued just as well as we know them today. Just a thought. Never the less I understand Bills opinion, though I don't completely agree. Then again he was in the band and I wasn'twinking smiley

i dont agree that brian didnt contribute much to the stones, he played several instruments on many great songs and was the main driving force behind the ever changing stones sound, without that the stones would be considered a lot shallower musically.

no doubt mick was a talented musician too and the sound of the band changed when he came in, but they were very different from the jones era.

The fact that he played instruments on songs doesn't mean he is a big deal. It was Jagger/Richard songs. If Brian wasn't in the band then someone else would have played the instruments. Plus they improved greatly s a live act when he left.

The same as the recent Crossfire Hurricane video ended at or around 1981, it was just fitting for that particular documentary. I really didn't look much beyond that at the time Stone Alone came out.

Maybe Motley Crue could give them some tips on putting together a final tour.

It's always too soon to talk about the end of the Stones. They'll probably roll longer than most of us think. They always have....How many people thought 1981-82 was the end because they were - oh my god - pushing 40....Of course it will end, but I wouldn't make any predictions just yet.

"Gonna find my way to heaven ..."

For me the symbolic ending was the last show in Mexico City.

It fulfilled my dream of watching them live.Mick Jagger joking, the audience and the good sensation after the concert ended. I miss that day!
